Next I will tell to you of my father, Canowicakte.
My father was born some time in the late 1700's in South Dakota. He was a tall man and was named Ogaleesha as a boy which means 'wears a red shirt' as he always wore his favourite red shirt. My father was a great shot with a bow and arrow and when he was a teenager went to the woods with his friend Ho'tah. They went picking apples and my father said he could shoot an apple off the top of Hotah's head. Hotah took some persuading but finally agreed to let my father try. Hotah placed the apple on the top of his head and closed his eyes, my father raised his bow, took aim and fired, the arrow missed the apple went straight through Hotah's forehead killing him instantly. My father carried his friend back to the village. My father was severely whipped for this by his father and by Hotah's father and was almost expelled from the village. The villagers gather together and decided to rename my father Canowicakte meaning 'kills in the woods' to remind him of what he had done for the rest of his life. That is the story of how my father got his name.
