Chapter 2

I gasped at the sight before me. Willow trees and tulips littered either side of the winding paths ahead of me, the occasional green park bench providing a place to rest. Up ahead, small cottages stood and all the Faerie Folk dashed about from cottage to cottage. The green grass provided space for young Folk to play, and learn to fly. The whole atmosphere was calm and collected, just like the kingdom's Queen.

"Wow." Is all I managed to say. The sight before me was beautiful, and all the Folk seemed happy.

"Oh, dear, you haven't seen anything yet." She said.

She led me further into the kingdom, pointing out things of interest. I listened, intrigued, and took in all the knowledge I could store in my brain.

We soon arrived at a waterfall. If I wasn't impressed before, (which I was) I was now majorly impressed. Clean, clear water gushed down and into a small pond at the bottom and various sized rocks littered the edges. I was mesmerized by the waterfall, I stood staring at it for what seemed like hours. Eventually, the Queen snapped her fingers in front of my face and I awoke from my trance-like state.

We started our long walk to the heart of the kingdom: the Queen's castle. The walk didn't seem as long as I was expecting, but my legs were starting to hurt by the time we arrived.

After we finally arrived, I gasped. Before me, two large iron gates rose up, preventing me from entering. The Queen typed a code into a small, electronic device and the iron gates slid open.

The front garden was breathtaking. Roses and small trees filled the space, and a crocket game was set up on the lush, green grass. The path leading to the large, oak doors was made of small, coloured stones. I smiled up at her.

"This is amazing." I complimented. She returned my smile with a glint of happiness in her eyes. We walked up to the doors. They seemed to beckon me to open them.

Another code later, and we were walking inside the big palace. My jaw dropped to the floor as I took it all in.

We were standing on polished, oak floors and the walls were made of shiny, white marble. I ran my hand over the shiny walls and closed my eyes. Opening them, I stood in front of the wide staircase and gazed up to the next floor. The crystal chandelier glistened in the sunlight that was pouring into the large foyer. I inhaled the lovely scent of lavender, my favourite.

Walking up the staircase, I noticed the shiny wooden banister and couldn't resist placing my hand on it.

Thick, purple carpet lined the floor upstairs and I quickly slipped my shoes off to feel it. It was fluffy and soft under my sweaty feet. I moaned and closed my eyes.

On either side of the hallway, doors to various room stood. Opening the first door, I peered in and gasped. It was a nursery. Painted pink, the walls held pictures of unicorns and Faeries. Pictures that were obviously from the human world. They depicted Faeries as small, happy make-believe creatures that frolicked in forests or meadows. While we were small, our tempers could get out of control easily and we didn't fly around in meadows or forests. We  lived in kingdoms and had nothing to do with humans.

The Faeries in the paintings had huge, colourful wings that stayed outstretched on their backs at all times; but Faeries really had retractable wings that could be any colour and any size. Usually the Faeries that were born into royalty had the huge, colourful wings while the small, poorer Faeries had small, dull wings.

The Queen joined me in the nursery room.

"You know, this was going to be your nursery before we decided that you would live with your father." She said with sadness in her sweet voice.

I said nothing, just continued to stare at the paintings on the wall. One interested me in particular: it was of a young Faerie like me that was sitting on top of a graceful, white unicorn. Her white dress was torn and her tears were red with blood. Her beautiful, rainbow wings flopped down with exhaustion and she had an exhausted look about her. The unicorn in the painting held up its front leg with pride; as if he had just captured a criminal and was receiving a great reward for it. I noticed one last thing: the Faerie's arms and legs were bound with gold wire; a Faerie's only weakness.

Why would a picture like that be in a nursery? I wondered. I didn't inquire about it, though. The Queen was too busy babbling on about how nice it was to have me here.

We moved on to another room but I couldn't stop thinking about the painting. It was so depressing, and so unlike all the other pictures and paintings in the room. I finally managed to return my focus  to the Queen. She looked expectantly at me, obviously waiting me to answer a question she had asked.

"Uh... sorry, what did you say?" I asked.

"Did you even listen to any of that?" She answered my question with a question of her own. I shook my head no and she sighed. "I asked you if you like your room. Do you?" She queried. I just nodded, not even looking around my room. She rolled her eyes.

"You didn't even look around." She whined like a little child.

I peered into the room. It had purple walls, a double bed in the centre of the room, oak furniture and plush, pink carpet. It was my dream room. I walked over to sit on the baby blue comforter laid out on my bed.

"I love it!" I exclaimed. That simple statement made her smile. It appeared as if she hadn't smiled in a long time.

I flopped down on the bed and soon fell asleep. I dreamt of the Faeries frollicking in the meadow just like in the painting.
