TEN YEARS LATER
“We’ll take her”, Olivia said as soon as she saw five year old Danielle playing with her doll in the orphanage.
“How much?”, Linn asked the woman in charge of the orphanage as he took out a pen and a checkbook.
Little Danielle was thrilled to bits and smiled from ear to ear at her soon-to-be parents. At last she was going to be adopted! As soon as the deal was made, Linn took Danielle’s little hand and walked her out.
“Are you my new Mommy and Daddy?”, Danielle asked, looking up at Olivia and Linn and squinting from the rays of the sun.
“Yes, we are”, Olivia smiled down at her.
“How come you don’t have any children?”, Danielle asked.
“Well, I’m sterile. It means I can’t have children”, Olivia said and carried Danielle to the car.
“Oh…”, Danielle nodded in understanding.
After about two months, during October, Olivia and Linn took Danielle to another orphanage out of town.
“I love you, Danielle”, Olivia said as she kissed her on the cheek.
“I love you too, Mommy”, Danielle smiled. “Why are you taking me here?” Danielle pointed to a bright sign in front of a building that said ‘Fun Kids Orphanage’.
“You are going to be here for a while darling” Linn pinched Danielle’s chubby cheeks and carried her.
“How long Daddy?”
“Don’t worry, dear” Linn ruffled her hair. “We’ll come back for you as soon as possible.”
“Promise?”, Danielle said and held out her last finger.
“Promise”, Olivia and Linn said as they pinky-promised her but a tear ran down Olivia’s face.
“Why are you crying Mommy?” Danielle touched Olivia’s face.
“Oh, it’s nothing”, Olivia wiped the tear off her face.
“Don’t worry Mommy, I’ll be a good girl. You don’t have to cry then”, Danielle coaxed.
“We know you will”, Linn said and left her at the orphanage.
So day after day Danielle will wait for Olivia and Linn to come pick her up. This went on for a month and Danielle’s patience still has not worn out.
“Danielle”, the woman in charge of the orphanage pulled her aside one day. “You have to be given away for adoption”
“What? But I want my Mommy and Daddy!”, Danielle cried.
“I know that dear, but we’re closing and we informed your parents a week ago that if they don’t come pick you up, you have to be given away”, the woman explained.
“NO! I want my own Mommy and Daddy!!”, Danielle shrieked and put her hands to her ears.
“Calm down Danielle”, the woman coaxed and tried to pull Danielle’s hands from her ears.
“But they promised…”, Danielle mumbled before blacking out.

“DANIELLE!!”
Danielle woke up in a shock and realized that she was just dreaming.
