A lone deer is standing in the middle of a small clearing , surrounded by the greenest grass generously decorated by flowers of the most gorgeous sorts. The forest stretches for miles and miles around the animal, only once broken by a small town even deeper inside the forest that has the size of a country.
A faint sound of fallen leaves being crushed beneath feet has the deer lifting its head, ears pointing straight upwards and all attention on where the sound had come from.
The wind is coming from south today, a warm breeze carrying the scents of one human away from the deer. The boy is hiding in the bushes where the clearing turns into forest, feet asleep from being in the same position for too long. In the opposite direction sits another male. He is shorter that the first one, but that does not make him less terrifying to the animal that he had purposely let catch his strange scent, when he steps out of the plants covering him.
The deer reacts instantly. She jumps in surprise, then sprints as fast as her thin legs allow her, away from the foreign threat - right into the arms of the other boy who has a flint-stone knife ready, grip tight on the wooden handle.
A high pitched scream makes birds in the trees around the scene take off. The sound of many pairs of wings moving almost covers the boys' yells of victory. They're safe from starvation for at least one more week.
--------------------
Kyungsoo inches closer to the fire. His hands are shaking from the coolness of fall on the verge of winter. On the other side of the deep orange flames sits his partner, Jongin. Both males are regularity eyeing the skinned deer hanging over the fire from a branch supported by a primitive set of tripods - just three sticks bound together by thin willow trees.
Though a whole week's worth of food is in front of them, the time after its been consumed will bring starvation and more worries for the boys. They cannot keep living like this, and though the fact remains unsaid, they are both aware of the truth of it.
Jongin reaches out a finger and pokes the meat a few times.
"Put the fire out. We'll smoke what we can't eat of the meat," he states plainly. Kyungsoo notes the slight frown visible on his face.
"Are you worrying about useless things again, dear?" In the fluttering light from the dying flames, Jongin sees a knowing smile plastered on his boyfriend's lips, one he knows all too well. How is this boy not worried?
Without a bag to carry the smoked meat in, animals of the forest will have eaten it by the time the he and Kyungsoo wake up in the morning. The one they had made a few months ago from the skin of a badger had been completely ruined by some animal. A big one, judging from the teeth marks in the skin and the paw prints on the soft ground around the scene. Jongin has heard stories of bears the size of the Town Hall wandering around in the woods around the town when he was little.
He has only later come to understand that those tales, told to children, are simply made up. The fictional beasts would keep youngsters inside the safe confines of the town walls, never giving them the courage to go outside and discover the real world.
Kyungsoo watches as Jongin stares into the ember ashes. Jongin's worries are meaningless; whilst he was out collecting small branches for the fire, Kyungsoo had cleaned the skin from the deer in the river not far from their camp and started sewing it into the shape of a bag.
When Jongin returns from his memories, Kyungsoo tells him so. The taller lets out an audible sigh before sinking more into the ground. The relief covers the embarrassment, and a smile decorates his lips when he falls asleep peacefully. Kyungsoo only smiles back and starts to work on the bag again, determined to finish it before dawn.
Halfway through the night, though, Jongin wakes up and orders the older to lay down and get some sleep. They have a long day before them - cutting the meat into manageable pieces and delete all traces of a fire takes a great amount of time, and they also have to keep their supplies protected from animals all the while.
But they're happy. Finally.
