The crowded tent was filled with confused mumbling, scared voices and plain confusion. It hit Sehun that nobody had been told of today's main event. They had been kept in the dark about this until the last moment, until it would be impossible to prevent it from happening.

He looked to his left, where Luhan was standing, Sehun's support being the only thing keeping him from falling, hitting the hard ground and never getting up. He looked like he hadn't realized where they were or what was happening just yet. Luhan looked up at his boyfriend, his eyes clouded with confusion.

"Sehun... I don't understand, I-"

"It's okay. We'll be okay, Luhan.

I promise."

And his eyes met Kyungsoo's once again, and he knew that this would be his last lie.

--------------------

At least it'll be painless, Luhan thought as he stood with the small handful of berries in his hand, ready for what was about to happen.

He knew what kind of berries these were, and he knew what would happen if one eats them. When he was just a child, he'd had his first firsthand encounter with death when he fed the berries to an injured bird he had found in the woods.

It would be painless, they'd told him, before placing the small fruits in his bony hand.

But as prepared and calm Luhan was on the outside, Sehun was equally devastated. He wasn't ready for this - it wasn't supposed to end this way. They were supposed to be free now, away from the town and the Healer who cast this curse upon them, who lead them to this. But no matter how much he wanted to deny it, here he was, next to the only person he had ever really loved, minutes from death.

But Sehun wanted nothing but to live.

"You have three minutes," he heard a voice say. And it hit him that this was, indeed, the end.

And he thought, why not spend these last damned minutes on something - someone - who mattered to him. And so, he turned around to face the love of his life, making eye contact and keeping it for just a few seconds before stretching out his arms towards Luhan and pulling him in for the tightest hug any of them had ever experienced.

And cried.

Seconds later, he felt his worn-out heart break at the feeling of the small boy crying too, in the arms of himself, not being able to do anything but tighten his grip around him, letting Luhan know that he was right there.

The two had soon, without noticing it at all, used up their last minutes alive. A man pulled them apart with unnecessary force, making Luhan fall to the ground. Sehun ran to his aid but was held back by strong arms not letting him take another step.

The pain of being so close but yet too far, just out of reach, shattered what was left of Sehun's sanity. He turned to the eyes resting on him, specifically the two he knew was piercing him, wanting him to look.

And Sehun looked into Jongin's eyes, ones of greater sorrow and despair than he had ever seen, and he knew. He knew that the exact thing that had happened to him and Luhan was happening at this moment to their best friends.

And Jongin looked into his best friend's dark eyes, and he knew what Sehun was trying to tell him. And he knew it was the right thing to do. Sehun and Luhan had failed and was about to meet the consequences of it, but he and Kyungsoo had to try again. They had to run away.

So as two of the people who had helped him through the hardest part of his existence stood before him, ready to die, he stood up, turned around, and walked away from them, turned his back on them one last time, and left, carrying a frozen Kyungsoo in his arms.

The people around them took no special notice but all kept their eyes frozen on what was going on in front of them. The execution of two nothing but innocent humans, for a reason that only four in the tent could understand.

The berries were forced into their mouths when both boys were too distracted watching the couple leave to resist.

At first, Luhan felt nothing, and he wondered if they had been given the wrong berries. But then his body started going numb; starting from his neck, making his head fall to his chest, then moving downward at a too fast pace, and he could only watch and observe himself and Sehun slowly collapsing, limb after limb dying on them, their legs failing to keep them standing.

Finally, as he was laying on what felt like clouds, Luhan realized that he couldn't breathe.

He struggled for a while, desperately wanting to just turn his head to face Sehun, before slowly giving up. He heard the cry of a broken person screaming his name before all he saw was darkness.

Sehun could hear the ruffling at his side stop, and a single tear left his eye, rolling down his cold cheek, and the last thing he sensed before running out of air was a sharp pain in his chest when his heart stopped beating.
