Let's start our lesson! Let me talk about Sultan Bolkiah.

Sultan Bolkiah was the son of Sultan Sulaiman. He became the fifth Sultan of Brunei.

During Sultan Bolkiah's time, Brunei became the superpower of the region. The whole of Borneo and parts od the Philippines were under the Brunei's empire. There were also many kimgdoms that had friendly relations with Brunei. With peace, a lot of trading took place and many people visited Brunei. All these made Brunei a wealthy empire and a great place for new ideas and learning. This was the Golden Age of Brunei.

HOW WAS THE BRUNEI EMPIRE ESTABLISHED UNDER SULTAN BOLKIAH?

Sultan Bolkiah faced many challenges when he was in power. Yet, the Brunei Kingdom reached its Golden Age under his rule.

A. Challenges faced by Sultan Bolkiah

First challenge: Unfriendly neighbours

Some of Brunei's neighbours were unfriendly. They carried out pirate attacks and raids on Brunei ships and ports.

Sulu pirates often attacked villages and threatemed Brunei's peace.

Second challenge: Old trade methods

Sultan Bolkiah realised that Brunei's trade methods were outdated. He wanted mew ideas on how to make Brunei rich and succesful.

B. How did Sultan Bolkiah solve the problems faced by Brunei?

male Brunei: Let's take a look at what Sulatn Bolkiah did to make Brunei safe and prosperous kingdom.

First solution: Build new friendships with neighbouring countries

Sultan Bolkiah built strong relationships with neighbouring coumtries.

Sultan Bolkiah established a good relationship with the Chimese emperor and the king of the Majapahit kingdom.

He even forged friendships with the Sulu kingdom and the Portugese. He believed that it was important to be friendly to everyone!

"The Sultan of Brunei wants to build trade links with us, the Portugese!"

Second solution: Conquest

Sultan Bolkiah built up his army and navy to defend Brunei against its enemies and to comquer small kingdoms.

Brunei's army and navy were so powerful that the whole of Borneo and parts of the Philippines came under their control. Hence, many kingdoms wanted Brunei's protection and friendship.

Third solution: Welcoming foreigners

Antonio Pigafetta: I am the first European visitor to Brunei in 1521.

In 1511, Malacca was destroyed and taken over by the Europeans. The Europeans were from Portugal. Many Muslims merchants and traders fled and came to Brunei. Sultan Bolkiah welcomed them. Their experience and special trading skills benefited Brunei.
He also welcomed Europeans to learn from them.

Fourth solution: Travels

Sultan Bolkiah loved to travel and to visit the places he ruled. The travels made him able to understand his people better. It provided him with new ideas on how to rule his empire too.

THE KINGDOM OF BRUNEI UNDER SULTAN BOLKIAH

Peace and Stability

There was peace because Sultan Bolkiah was a strong ruler. There were many different tribes and kingdoms in his empire. He united all of them. This created stability in the Brunei.

Trade and Wealth

Sultan Bolkiah encouraged trade. Ships from China, India, Southeast Asia and even Europe came to Brunei to trade. It made the Brunei empire wealthy.

New Ideas and Contacts

Sultan Bolkiah strenghened his contacts with neighbouring kingdoms and countries. He welcomed foreigners and even travelled outside Brunei. His contacts with the outside world gave him new ideas on how to build up his empire.

Conquest and Expansion

Sultan Bolkiah conqured neighbouring kingdoms. He and his Brunei chiefs also married the princesses from neighbouring kingdoms. This helped the Brunei empire to expand.
