It's 5:36pm and you sat on a blanket with blue and black checkered squares practically dying in 100 degree weather. you were surrounded by people of all different races and sizes but we're only focused on the music playing through your earbuds. it was Fourth of July evening and you were alone, as always, sitting on that dumb blanket in the stadium of Howell High School. Howell High does a firework show every year and usually you go with friends but this year they all decided to go to a party on the rural side of town and you wanted no part of it.

when the sun started to set you took out your earbuds, grabbed a water from your backpack, and took out your favorite book , The Outsiders, and opened up to page 63. a couple minutes later you were snapped out of your trance by a light tap tap on your shoulder. you whipped around to lock your eyes with a set of brown ones. he was a cute boy with red hair in a slight quiff who had a teeshirt with a punk band's name on it. you smiled and he started to speak, "hi, I saw that you were reading The Outsiders and that's like my favorite book and movie. i fall in love again every time I read it." your grin was now at full capacity, "me too! S.E. Hinton never fails to amaze me!" now his grin was as big as yours. "I'm josh", is what the boy said, you replied with your name and turned back to your book.

it was around 8 something now and it was dark. the stars were all aglow and the moon was illuminating a blue, white color. the air was in the middle of hot and cold and the smell of gun powered from the test fireworks filled the air. "welcome to the Howell High School firework show!" blared through the high tech sound system.  you sigh, put down your book, and tried to get comfortable and that was hard because you had been sitting for 3 hours. before you could say 'Fourth of July' awful, unoriginal country music started playing over the loud speakers and then BOOM POP SIZZLE SIZZLE. fireworks in colors of blue, white, and ,you guessed it, red, started to paint the black sky leaving trails of grey smoke behind.

"wow this must be awful for our already asthmatic air quality", sitting next to you on your blanket was josh. "I know. I can just feel myself getting asthma right now", you said still staring up at the fireworks. "hey y/n can I ask you a question?", josh said looking up at the colorful explosions. you nodded and he proceeded, "why are you here alone?". you chuckled and said ," basically I have no friends who like to do "lame" shit like this. and I could ask you the same thing." josh turned his head to you and said "well, you got a super cool dude right here who loves lame shit!".

after about 20 minutes of small talk and quick glances at each other, the finale of the show was in a couple seconds. the huge, red fireworks were exploding right in front of us. they felt so close I thought there embers were going to float down and burn us. you were so captivated in the colors that when josh put his hand on yours you noticed he scooted closer. he put his arm around you and you snuggled into his shoulder. he looked down at you and you looked up into his chocolate brown eyes, the fireworks in front of you guys growing more intense by the second. you both leaned in for the kiss, kissing in front of the fountains of mostly red fireworks. as cheesy as it sounds you could have sworn you felt something, you guessed right again, fireworks. you pulled away and smiled then said, "josh, your hair looks like the fireworks."
