Chapter four: it's ice cream, not frozen yogurt-
I expected a million questions from Kayla when I sat down. I expected a million accusations and comments and scolding, and to be honest, I deserved it. I just hope that, even though Alex saw Kayla, he’d find it somewhere inside of him to never touch her. Alex now knows my weak spot, and would probably use her to manipulate me.
I gritted my teeth, cussing myself in my head. I just had to go and get her involved. As soon as I heard she was going to be living in Celia's house, I knew I couldn't resist the urge to talk to her. I'm not even sure if she remembers, but we were friends as children. Whenever her entire family would gather at Celia's house for meals or fireworks, or maybe even football games and television programs, I would be there. Celia always wanted me to talk to Kayla, to get to know her. I laughed as I remembered her telling me that she'd like to see us married one say.
That seems so long ago now...
But, anways, back to the moment. When I slid into the booth, all she said was “I hope you’re not allergic to nuts,”
I let out a quiet laugh. “What?”
Kayla smiled back at him and scooped up a spoon full of ice cream. “Well, I couldn’t decide which to get myself, and I was stuck between the confetti, and the peanut M&M’s, so I go the confetti, then I gave you the peanut M&M’s one so I could do this,” and she reached across the table and got a spoonful of my ice cream. He gave her a funny look. “What?” She exclaimed around a mouthful of ice cream. “I waited here for like four whole minutes, because I was trying to be polite and not start eating without you. I totally deserved a bite of your ice cream,” She smiled the gofiest smile, and I couldn't help but feel myself being warmed by her good nature.
I laughed at her again, nodding. “You’re right. You did deserve a bite of my ice cream,”
We chatted for the duration of ice cream eating, and the car ride back home. And though Kayla never said anything about it, I could tell she badly wanted to know what went down in the library.
I think that's what was making me feel the most guilty. The fact that she hadn't even asked about it, but you could almost feel her curiosity.
“Look,” I said, breaking in her sentence at random. She was just babbling anyways (she did that a lot). “Alex and his gang, they’re no good,” I said told her as the car climbed the hill, signaling the nearness of her hosue. “Alex isn’t dangerous when he’s by his self, but he’s hardly ever by his self. He’s always got a few of his guys somewhere around. I don’t want you talking with Alex, but I defiantly don’t want you around any of his guys. Okay?”
“Okay…” She agreed, her voice bordering between fear and curiosity.
“Anyone that he associates is no good, Kayla. Understand?” I said intensely. I needed her to understand this.
“Except for you,” She remarked.
“Especially me,” I said under my breath. Kayla caught this, and shook her head vigorously, but I didn’t argue. I was mentally wore out. “The only difference between me and them is that I can’t stay away from you, and they have to,” I told her. I was well aware of the fact of how much I was confusing her, so I dropped the subject completely.
Conversation ceased as we both thought intensly about what one another had said, and the actions that were carried out.
Alex had only come to warn me. He said that Lauran was trying to get me killed, literally, by putting him up against the challenger we agreed on. But facts were facts; I needed money to pay people back.
Although I wish I hadn't, I pulled the car into the driveway of the old, giant house and cut the engine, getting out and opening the door for Kayla.
I'm trying to be the gentleman Kayla deserved. Although, I'm not a very polite person. I', actually a bit of a dick, I know Kayla deserves the best. And, that's what I intend to give her. I trynot think about her "boyfriend" all the way in NewYork. I inwardly scoffed. Yeah, so what, the thought makes me jealous. There's nothing wrong with that, right?
“Thanks,” She said, smiling and snapping me from my thoughts.
I think Kayla was spoiling me, because it was almost hard to fake a smile. “Thank you,” I replied. She unlocked the door to her house and sat her backpack down on the floor, standing in the doorway and waving as I started the car and began to back out. She suddenly remembered something, and ran across the yard with her bare feet, I saw her once I'd reached the street and I stopped and waited for her to approach.
I rolled down the passenger side window and Kayla leaned into it. “I forgot to tell you,” She told him. “It’s ice cream. Not frozen yogurt,”
