Out of the empty cooler I take out a small survival kit. I leave the ice packs in the cooler and then I find a nice sturdy long stick. I wrap some string around the tip and let a few feet dangle.
Out of the survival kit I take out a small fishing box. I tie a hook to the other end of the string and then take out a piece of marshmallow that I had brought for bait.
There were salmon in this river. Good, yummy salmon. I knew because When I was little, my mom had taken me fishing in the part of the river that was near the town. We caught about five salmon in an hour using only marshmallows as bait. We brought the fish home and Mom cooked them for dinner. They were absolutely delicious.
I put the marshmallow on the hook and cast my line into the water. A few minutes later, something bit.
It was a big fighter, but I finally pulled him ashore. It was a huge salmon.
I put it in the cooler and fish again.
I repeated this process until my cooler was full of fish, enough fish to last me a while.
I sit down on the ground, a little tired from catching all of those fish. I stare at the ground and listen to the sounds of the woods. The birds chirping, the breeze drifting through the outstretched boughs of the trees...
Suddenly I hear footsteps approach me. I look up and see a figure a little bigger than me, standing there, staring at me. I stand up. In the hazy twilight it was impossible to make out the face of the person, but I could tell by their voice that it was a child.
"Hello? who are you? When did you get here?" The voice was that of a young boy.
"Hold on one moment while I make a fire so that we can see each other."
I proceeded to gather dead leaves and sticks and arranged them into a classic teepee fire just outside of my tent door. I grabbed some waterproof matches out of my survival kit and stuckx one. I touch it to the leaves in the center of the sticks and in no time the fire is raging.
The boy moves closer to the fire. I see his face now. He looked around my age with a handsome face. he had a red long sleeve shirt and jeans on. He sat down by the fire across from me. We sit in silence for a while until I break the spell.
"Who are you and how did you get here?" I asked with honest curiosity.
"I've been here for a few months. My parents were not very nice people. So I ran off and ended up here. Why did you come?"
I sighed, and told him.
"Well, there was a boy that lived near me. He was kind, calm and confident, all that you could ask for in a friend. I woke up one morning and found his ring on my finger. I tried to tell a dear friend of mine hoping she would help me, but a man dressed in black with a gun stopped me. I shut my eyes and when I opened them again, a stick was in my hand. it turned to metal and deflected the man's bullet. After that I ran and ended up here."
I picked up some dirt and it turned into gold nuggets in my hand. I put them down and they turned back into dirt.
"Wow," he said, "That was cool. I'm Danny, by the way."
"Liannamarie, but you can call me Lianna."
