After running out of Travis' apartment I ran down the hall and rapidly pressed the down button on the elevator. Finally the doors open and I almost bowled over a guy getting off the elevator. "Sorry." I said quickly, and then got on the elevator and pressed the button for my floor. The elevator came to a stop on my floor and I ran down the hall to my room and quickly unlocked the door and ran inside. I stuck my bag of food in the fridge and then ran to my room to change clothes. I ran a brush through my hair, picked up my purse and ran back out of the apartment, locking the door behind me. After I got on the elevator and pushed the button for the lobby level I looked at my watch and realized that I could slow down. So once the elevator dinged and the doors opened I casually stepped off and made my way to the parking garage at a much slower speed.
I found my car quickly, the last time I had had to park it I had gotten lucky and found an empty spot near the door into the main building. I unlocked it and slid into the driver's seat and buckled in before reaching around my steering wheel to put the key in the ignition. I turned the key and the car made a whirring sound before going quiet. I tried again, and the same reaction. "C'mon car, don't die on me, not today." One, two, three more tries and my car still wouldn't start. I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel anxiously for a minute before spotting a familiar redhead. He saw me too and waved. I waved back and then reached to try to start my car again. This time it roared to life and I muttered "About time." and then I shifted gears and pulled out of my parking spot and, once I was out of the garage, headed in the direction of Target.
Once I got there I clocked in and went to see where I was supposed to be working today. The snack bar....with Cody. 'Well, isn't that just peachy.' I thought to myself, 'Well, I'm sure we can be professional about this. Or at least, I know I can be. I wonder if Ashton knew who she was working with when she asked me to cover for her?' I sighed and locked my purse in my locker. I pulled my hair up into a pony tail and clipped on my nametag and then walked out of the locker room and to the other side of the store so I could switch with whoever had the shift before me.
"Jessi!" I heard an all too familiar voice call from behind me. I ignored him and quickened my pace, I didn't feel like talking to him anymore than I'd have to during this shift. "C'mon Jessippi, you can't keep avoiding me, you're going to have to talk to me anyway since we have the same shift next." I cringed slightly at my nickname, not having expected him to pulll that card, I mean, sure he had used it when we were friends, but it continued during our relationship, and that wound was still a bit too fresh. I knew I wasn't going to be calling him Hollywood anytime soon. "Cody, the wound is still fresh. I wasn't planning on talking to you very much, just however much I needed to to get through this shift." my voice shook as I spoke and he fell silent and I started walking quickly again.
Once we reached the snack bar I waved to Megan, the girl working the register I was taking over and paused to talk to her for a minute, pasting on a fake smile as we spoke. She left and so did the girl who had been manning the register that Cody was taking, out of the corner of my eye I noticed her flirting with him, but his focus was over on me. It was 2:00, the tail end of the lunch rush, though people would be coming in sometime around 3 for snacks most likely, so everything was rather slow for the first hour of our two hour shift. I sold a few soft pretzels and a hot dog and Cody sold some Icees.
During a large gap between customers, Cody walked towards me and said, "Look, I know how fresh the wound is, I'm still hurting too-" "Hurting from what!?" I yelled, "You were the one that cheated! Not me! I loved you, I trusted you! How could you do that to me?!" He pressed his finger to my lips, looking around, making sure our manager wasn't around, or worse, a customer that could report us. Once he deemed the coast clear he said, "I know. And I'm sorry! I never meant to hurt you, it was a mistake that I never wanted to make. It was a situation that I hadn't wanted to be in in the first place that got out of control. I've felt bad about it the entire time, but I've never gotten the chance to talk to you about it, until now." "At work?" I said bitterly, and gestured at our uniforms and our surroundings. "You wouldn't have given me any other chance if I had tried to text you asking to meet up." I glared and he raised his hands in defense and then I said, "But, what you just said were a bunch of excuses, the typical thing that a guy says if he got caught cheating. If you didn't want to be in that situation, why did you go to Max's bachelor party? You knew it was at a club. You wouldn't have gotten in that situation if you hadn't been there." I coldly turned my back to him and started sweeping up some popcorn that had fallen onto the floor.
