Chapter 12

ALYX'S POV * * *

I sit at the wheel. My hands holding it loosely, windows open and a smile on my face as a cool breeze travels through the van.

Alice and Ronnie are asleep in the big floor bed we made and Lokae's sitting in the passenger seat humming softly to Work Song by Hoizer as it plays from the speakers.

I start to sing and she joins in,

She turns the music down and shifts in her seat to face me, I look over and smile before focusing on the road again.

"I like it when your like this." She says softly. In that moment she reminded me of my little sister.

*flashback*

I lay on the soft ground, heat enveloping me as the sun rains down on me. Or it does until Iris plants a foot at each side of my waist, shading me from the warmth of the sun.

"Alyxxx did you even hear me?"

I open my eyes and smile up at her. "I'm sorry cutie I was lost in my head again. What's up?"

She smiles and lays down next to me. She turns onto her side and faces me. " I said that I love seeing you this way."

I face her and raise an eyebrow "What's different?"

"You're smiling. It's real. Not like the ones you and mommy wear so I'm not scared of daddy. You're eyes are sparkling like you're happy. I love it. It suits you. It only happens when mommy and daddy arent home and it's just you and me." She gives me a smile and I laugh lightly.

" You sure are smart for a four year old aren't ya doll. "

She giggles and gives me an almost Toothless smile.

The loss of teeth saddened me. Damn my father for making her loose them early.

She gets up and motions for me to do the same.

I do but kneel down to her level. Once I do so she wraps her arms around my neck and hugs me.

Her quite sobs fill my ears, "I'm sorry sissy. I love you sooo much."

I remember sitting in my room that night wondering what she ment but she must have known she couldn't handle another session from our father because the next morning she was gone.

The police asked mother and father what happened but they just said someone broke into the house.

"Alyx...Alyxxx...ALYX!" I jump slightly and look at Lokae.

"What?"

"You've gotten lost in your own head again. What I was saying was that I like seeing you this way. Smiling for real. Not that fake shit you put on to make me and the others happy. A real genuine smile. And you get this sparkle in your eyes like your the happiest person in the world. I love it. It makes me happy. "

I smile softly and mumble to myself "great minds think alike."

"Huh?"

"Oh nothing. You just remind me of someone. "

And with that said the only noise left was the soft hum of music and the car moving along the smooth pavement.
