CHAPTER 19 - Only One On My Mind

Arabelle waited on the still train until the wave of students outside had cleared up.

She felt paralyzed sitting on the warm carpeting, and was tempted to stay on the train and let it just take her away.

Archer had discovered her secret, or at least one of them.

If he told someone. . .

The thought sent shivers up her spine.

If he told someone, Arabelle and her entire family would get arrested, only to never be seen again. She couldn't begin to imagine how much he would seize the offer and tell, just to stay on Ray's good side. Just to destroy Arabelle's life and family.

But if she left, things would be worse.

Micah and her mother would get interrogated until they finally spilled out the nasty truth and all the secrets they had hid from Society for years. They would be forced to reveal her location, which they wouldn't know unless she left right now without telling them.

And she knew all too well as to how the Society got answers from people who refused to talk.

Guilt, fear, and anxiety built up in her, threatening to release the hot tears she forced herself to hide for the last two days.

The floor she sat limply on began to vibrate, signalling that the train was leaving; probably to go to another City.

Right now, it seemed like an easy and tempting escape, but she knew better.

Grabbing her book bag with a trembling hand, she forced herself to stand, and grabbed hold of the cold metal handle and jumped, landing on the hard pavement with a thump.

Nobody was around, making it seem like a massive ghost town.

All the students were probably already halfway across Eden, making their way home after a long day. If they were that far by now, there was no way she could catch up to Archer. She didn't even know where he lived.

Arabelle started to slowly tread across the empty streets, tightly clutching her book bag.

But even if she did find him, what would she say to him?

Hey, you're not going to tell anybody right?

No. It was too obvious.

Plus, if he was with his friends and they heard that, they would badger him until he spilt the truth.

Can we talk? About. . . you know.

Nope. It sounded like they were having relationship issues and needed a cover up.

Ew, no!

The thought of her and Archer in a relationship made her want to gag. There was no way she would ever touch, kiss, or even try to be near that boy.

Well, try to be near him again.

What happened on the train didn't count. Hopefully.

She could still smell the soap that covered him, and could still feel the warmth of him when he leaned over and grabbed the tech screen out of her hands.

Her cold hands started to tremble with hatred at the memory, and she started to walk a little faster.

How dare he take that tech screen out of my hands. It was none of his business.

Who does he think he is?

Just because his best friend practically owns the school, doesn't mean he can treat everyone the way he wants. It doesn't mean he can be a complete ass to everyone he doesn't like.

A scowl painted her pale pink lips as her legs started speed up.

To hell with him.

I won't tell him a single thing. I won't tell him to keep any secret of mine.

In fact, maybe I'll tell him all of them. I'll show him that I'm not afraid of him or his stupid friends. I'll show him that I'm not afraid of him telling my secrets.

I have no one left to lose except for myself.

Micah obviously doesn't need me or Mother, so that's perfect.

One less person to worry about that might face the consequences instead of me.

She was practically flying through the streets, her hair whipping madly in her face, and her book bag banging against her thigh.

To hell with it all!

Even if there were any students left out on the streets, they wouldn't see her at the speed she was going at. They wouldn't see the hot tears rolling down her cheeks and violently hitting the pavement beneath her.

There was only one person on her mind that didn't have to do with family, Society, or Archer.

Sunto.

He'd tell her what to do.

He already knew that she wrote anyways. It was one of the few secrets she had spared him.

She trusted him, and he would show her the way.

He would be able to faintly light up the dark path she was on, showing her where to go so that she wouldn't get hopelessly lost forever.
