He had managed to narrowly avoid the surveillance camera as he pressed up against the cold marble wall. If anyone caught him now, it would probably be the end of him. No one was allowed to snoop around in Official business.
So why am I even risking this? It's not worth to get cited for this.
The good half of him felt like some sort of invisible force he had to fight against. It was threatening to move his legs from their stiff position and walk him straight back to the stuffy classroom. The more rebellious half of him wanted him to. . . Well who was he kidding? Archer had no "rebellious" half of him. Ever since he was little, he had complied and followed every rule, order, and demand that the Government wanted.
Everyone and even himself knew that he was one of the goody two shoes of Society, along with his friends. Ray and Jessica always sucked up to the Officials whenever they could. They were always complimenting them, and asking the most obvious questions about their job.
"What do you do?". Everyone knew that.
"I love the colour of your outfit". A boring pearly snow white.
"I want to be an Official someday". Good luck with being serious, Ray.
He and Oliver just followed behind them, not saying a word. The both of them never liked to talk to Officials, and even being near them made them queasy. How can Ray and Jessica even stand it?
His arms ached as he pressed them tighter against the wall. The glass door that led into the Head Office was movement activated, so if anyone walked in front of it, its scanners would activate, making the door slide open.
One single movement, and he would be discovered. It was a really sensitive scanner.
Not worth it. Not worth it. Turn back. Just turn back.
Something kept him planted there.
"Arabelle," sighed Micah as he took a shaky breath. "I'm fine. Honestly".
"Are you?," she fretted. "The first thing I see when those Officials come into the classroom is you standing behind them, looking like you're about to pass out!".
They must be alone if she's going to talk to him like that.
"I was so close to running across the classroom to catch you when you fell!".
"I wasn't going to pass out. Don't worry".
"Oh, you weren't were you?," Arabelle hissed. Archer was sure the had Officials headed to the back room to discuss something with the Representative Principle. If the Officials heard Arabelle speak like this. . . Aces. It would probably be the end of her.
"I can't do this every time, Micah". Her voice was shaking and all the venom had vanished into thin air.
"What do you mean?".
There was a pause of hesitation. "I can't always act like the brave one. I can't always be the one that doesn't have the choice to not show my emotions".
Micah took in another shaky breath, and Archer could imagine him running his hand through his messy hair. It was his signature move.
"I know. I know, Arabelle. It's just that if anything happens to us. . .". His voice trailed off. "You know it's my responsibility to look out for the both of us. If anything happens to you, I'll be torn. That's why I panic so much. I can't help it".
Another pause of silence over took the two of them and Archer could also imagine Arabelle pulling down the sleeves of her grey cardigan to conceal her hands.
