Maya ran after Lucas. "Huckleberry!" Lucas looked back and tried to pretend that he didn't hear anything. "I know you heard me Hopalong!" Maya screamed at him.
Lucas walked back to Maya. "Please, enough! Stop with the names, especially right now!" Lucas sat down on the bench near them.
"Want to tell me what's going on?" Maya asked with the implication that it wasn't optional.
"I'm sorry. Honestly the fact that I blamed you for this -- I'm an ass!" Lucas never avoided eye contact with Maya -- that's why they could discuss the important things -- they always saw the emotion in the eyes and knew when to draw the line and when the line didn't have any part of the conversation.
"No, it's okay -- I get it. It hurt. A lot. But I get it..." Maya said with a half-smile. "We don't need to talk about that right now, what we need to talk about is Callie! What the hell is going on?!"
"I don't know. I thought she was back in Texas, I haven't spoken to her or about her since we broke up. It wasn't really even a breakup. I think we were still best friends, we just labelled it differently. You know? I mean I don't think it was a real relationship." Lucas barely looked into Maya's eyes. She knew it was bothering him, she sat down beside him and grabbed his face.
"Look at me!" They just stared at each other for what seemed like a lifetime, but was only a couple seconds. Maya curled her fingers into fists and pulled them away from Lucas' face. "You have never not been able to look me in the eyes when we're talking, that's how I know what's going on right now is bothering you, A LOT! I want you to look me in my eyes right now and tell why this is bothering you. No matter what crap we've been through, we've never not been able to talk to each other."
"Well our first date was pretty silent..." Lucas chuckled.
Maya looked at him, "And whose fault was that? Talk to me!"
Lucas took a deep breath and just let everything go. "There's never really been any choice of 'WE' in decisions I'm involved in, that's why I always put things off to the other person or I make the decision. Even solving that stupid triangle; we all knew it had to end but..."
Maya looked confused. "But what?"
"I don't think we really talked about it. I just saw this new guy trying to get Riley's attention and it bothered me, A LOT! I don't know what would've happened if it had been you who stayed up all night talking to some guy; would I be super jealous? Would I be relieved? Would I have finally just, just--" Lucas started to fumble his words again, it was kind of his nervous tendency.
"Just what Huckleberry?" Maya clung onto the words that came out of Lucas' mouth: But, Just... They were telling her something he never had before. "Lucas, you can tell me anything, you know that!"
Lucas looked down at his shoes, "Would I have finally just kissed you...? I don't know where my feelings for came from but they were there and I don't know if they're completely gone."
Maya and Lucas just stared at each other not knowing what to say or do, or even think. They just looked at each other waiting for something to happen. And in just one word the trance was broken.
"Lucas?"
