The last thing I remembered was riding in the car with Benedict, heading back to Forks after our date. I was sitting passenger, moping, not wanting to live this horrible life I was succumbed to because I was paralyzed and would never walk again.
Then there was a wreck in front of us that forced us to stop so suddenly and then a big rig crashed into us. I remember the sound of twisting metal and white hot pain and then I blacked out only to wake to Ben at my side.
It was in that moment when I knew I was dying that I wanted more than anything to live.
For what felt like forever I was burning. On fire. I wanted it to stop. I wanted to scream, to run from the fire but I couldn't do either. But after a while the fire began to die down and the pain slowly dissipated until it was gone.
For a moment I thought I was dead until my eyes opened and I was able to look around at my surroundings. I felt a twinge in my toes which I haven't felt since before I was paralyzed. It was the same thing I felt when I wiggled my toes.
Instinctively I moved to sit up and found that I could do it. My voice caught in my throat as a shock ran through me. I was sitting up by myself and I could move my toes and legs. Certainly I was dead... or at least dreaming.
I rose to my feet, quicker than I had ever moved before. I was in a neatly kempt room with lots of white furniture and windows that let in so much light. Before I could look around any further my name was called.
"Sophia." A familiar voice spoke.
Without thinking about it I spun around to face the door where the voice had come from. The voice came from Benedict. One look at Ben had me thinking he looked nervous... uneasy.
"Are you okay?" I asked him.
My voice sounded different, more musical or feminine if that was even possible.
"I'm perfectly fine, I'm more worried about you." He replied.
I held out my arms with a grin on my face. "Look at me, I can walk again!" I exclaimed. "I'm perfect!" I then remembered what Carlisle had said when I was first injured. "This... this shouldn't be possible. How...."
Ben slowly crossed the room and led me over to a small sitting area where we took a seat. "When we got into the car accident you were hurt so bad... you were going to die."
"So I am dead..." I began.
"Yes... and no." He paused to let that sink in. "You see, in order for you to survive I had to turn you into a vampire."
I laughed, not believing his words. "There is no such thing as vampires."
He moved to the edge of his seat. His expression was serious. "Sophia, I'm a vampire. My entire family are vampires too."
I laughed for a few more seconds before I realized he was being serious. But, vampires didn't exist.... they couldn't exist... right?
"Vampire venom, it heals everything, but at the cost of your human life. You were dying on that freeway and you would have if I wouldn't have bit you. My venom burned away the human side of you, but it healed you and now you can and will live forever."
I rose to my feet swiftly and began pacing back and forth at an unnatural speed.
If what he said was true than I am a vampire and vampires drank human blood which meant that I would have to drink human blood. "You've turned me into a monster!" I shrieked as I stopped in front of him. "I can never see my family again because if I do I'll end up killing them!" I lifted him up by his shirt and held him in the air. I was shocked at the strength I now had.
"That isn't true and part of you knows that because my family took you in and not one hair on your head has been harmed by us. We aren't bad vampires. We try and blend in and live peacefully among humans because we don't want to be monsters. We don't drink the blood of humans which is why our eyes are this golden color. We live off of the blood of animals." Ben rushed out.
It took a moment but then I loosened my grip on him and set him back to his feet.
"How long?" I breathed. "How long until I am able to see my family again?" I asked. It was not rocket science to realize that I wouldn't be allowed around them until I was strong enough to resist human blood.
"It all depends, but I have faith that if everything goes smoothly that in a year at most you should be fine."
I nodded my head and then my mind fell back on the room that I was in. "Where am I?"
