The lights blinded me as the train speed closer, the brakes screaming against the rails. The figure stood on the tracks not aware of the metal monster barreling towards him. I heard a strained voice scream out warning the figure about the train. As the figure looked over at me the train flew into its side and the figure vanished. Blood...blood...blood everywhere. Redness blurred my vision, more strangled screams...BeepBeepBeep.
I sat up in bed swearing when my head hit the board above me. Same dream... Every night. "My Carter, what language." I looked up and saw my little sister ( the know it all ) Hadley standing beside my bunk. "Hadley! What are you doing in here?" I griped looking for my glasses. I sat up and put them on glaring at Hadley. Hadley had our fathers bright blue eyes and short dirty blonde hair. She had the build of someone who could be a professional dancer and believe me it is her passion. She shriveled up under my glare and whispered in a small voice," I just wanted to tell you I made breakfast."
I was immediately crushed by a thousand pounds of guilt. "Hadley I'm sorry I know this has been hard for you." I gestured for her to hug me. Exactly two months ago as if today our parents died in a plane crash. Two months ago~
"But why daddy!" Hadley cried. "It's no big deal my little Haddie. You and Carter will just take an earlier flight to our new house in California so you two can settle in. Mama and I will finish up work here then meet you there in one week." Dad explained crouching and looking into her eyes. We were at the airport about to leave Mackinaw City, Michigan our home for pretty much my whole life. We were moving to San Diego for a job offer my mom couldn't refuse that would spiral her dancing career. A studio of her own was opening and dad was more than willing to move us closer so her dream could come true. We vacationed there last year and spent the last school semester attending Rosemary High School in Cali so we would have friends when we arrived. "Yeah Had, they'll join us soon." I told her. "Okay,"she said hugging our parents while tears poured down her cheeks. "Promise you'll be there in one week?" She said against mom's stomach still not letting go. "Promise my little Haddie, bye!" I hugged my dad and kissed my mom on the cheek, then took Hadley's hand in one hand and our luggage in the other as we walked towards the plane. " Wait!" My mom called. She jogged up and handed me a small wooden box. "Don't open it until I get there!" She said then she ran off.One week later I received a text from dad, "You both are our world. My little Haddie and my man Carter. We love you." I stared at the screen until it went black wondering what that meant when I heard Hadley scream. I ran into the room to see them live broadcasting a plane crash and stating there where no survivors. My heart stopped. I clutched Hadley to my chest as she sobbed into my arms. We stood there for at least half an hour, her crying and me... doing nothing. I stared at the screen which had long since been turned off. No tears fell for me, just a hard hand crushing my heart.
I let Hadley go and turned her towards the door. "I'll meet you downstairs," I said with a smile.
