Lucian’s P.O.V.

After Black dropped the bombshell and things actually calmed down, we managed to divide ourselves into teams. The decision to move right away was made without any protests, and I was glad.

I wasn’t in a team with Dimitri though. He suggested it, but with our mating bond, if we get captured or ambushed, we could send a message quickly without having to use cellphones. It took more energy to send a telepathic message from large distances so we could probably only use it a couple of times. But as I said, it was for emergencies, which I hoped we won’t be in.

My team was entitled to go find the Pheonix. Not an easy task. Pheonixes were practically extinct. The myth that they rose from their ashes weren’t very true when it came to a massive hunt on them. A lot of them were beheaded, the others ripped apart and the ones that survived went into hiding. Around the whole world, there were maybe a hundred of them. No one knew for sure.

The ones responsible for this were mostly the humans and the vampires in the time before. There were many guesses as to why they did it. The humans were probably hunters, out to destroy anything paranormal, but the vampires, well, they were probably just hunting them for their tears.

It is said that the tears of a Pheonix could heal any illness. And in the paranormal world, Pheonixe’s tears are practically priceless.

So imagine my dilemma. The Pheonix, if we ever found him, would probably burn me to a crisp as soon as he scented me. No, Pheonixes can’t breathe fire, but they have magical powers. Strong ones at that.

So it was a good thing I had Sasha in my team. He could be a diplomat… I hope. I don’t really know the guy that much. Sure, I’ve read his file, but I don’t know him as a person. Well, I know he drives and Audi R8. That must mean he’s good.

Apart from him, my team consisted of one of Black’s men- a tracker at that, Evan- and the psychopathic pain in the ass, a.k.a. Rayne.

At first it seemed stupid to make such a small team to track down one of the universes most powerful beings that perfected the art of hiding it’s ass and killing anyone who even came to discovering it’s hiding place, but after some thought I figured out it’s best that way.

If we sent out a bigger team, the Pheonix would get whiff of us very easily. And then we’d be screwed. This way, we have the means to track down the Pheonix, analyze it and then get it to come to our side. Most of the Pheonixes were neutral beings, but they still trained themselves to know how to kill.

“Stop thinking so hard. It’s going to give you wrinkles.” Sasha deadpanned from the driver’s seat of his Audi. The safest way for us to travel would be with a Hummer or another bulletproof vehicle, but those would be easy to spot.

“Who said I was thinking?” I retorted. Nothing against the guy, but I needed to know what makes him tic if I’m going to work with him, “Maybe I was just resting.”

“Because all of us could practically see those brain gears turning in your head. You’re worried. Concerned. For Dimitri’s well being and the success of this mission. You’re wondering how we’re going to find the Pheonix if it’s so good in hiding. You don’t know me nor Evan enough to make an assessment of weather we’ll be a hindrance or an asset on this mission. You’re worried that the Pheonix will slip through our fingers. You’re worried about us or Dimitri’s team being ambushed by rouges.” He didn’t turn towards me, but I could see him raise an eyebrow and his eyes harden. Well, well, seems someone has a short temper, “Did I get that all?”

“You’re good. But you forgot something. I’m also wondering if you and Evan are psychos like Rayne and my second in command. I’m wondering weather you’ll kill me when I piss you off or I’ll kill you.” I drawled, “For all I know, one or both of you could be working with the rouges. Maybe you’re the enemies and are leading us to a trap.”
