Chapter 1: Sucked Into Fantasy, Literally

Hello my name is Mela; I am 15 years old. I have long medium brown hair (which I have up in a ponytail most of the time), and I am quite short for my age. Also, I get made fun of by my best friend for my height but, I still am friends with her (I don’t know why though.) I go to the local school; Forest State High School. During my seventh grade year I joined their track and field hockey team, and been on them ever since. I throw discus and javelin in track, and have been in every meet so far this season (except when I broke my leg and couldn’t throw for a month.) I live in the small town of Hawley, Pennsylvania and, I have to carpool with my neighbor’s son to get to school because it’s so far away. On TV I was watching a track meet and it got canceled for a special news report. It was about people claiming they have seen shadows of animals with fierce glowing eyes in the forests near my house.

The next day I decided to go for a walk in the woods near my house. I need a break from reality; I wish I can go back into my fantasy world. I don’t have a break during the day to day dream like most kids. Before I got a chance to step out of the house my mom said.

“Why are you going out in the woods? You saw the news report!”

“I know, I heard it, but I need to go for a walk.”

“I don’t think you should, but you seem to be very good at protecting yourself- No, I said not to do that Allen, why don’t you ever listen to me!!!” She’s constantly yelling at my dad but, I’ve never seen her scream like this. I thought my ear drums were going to burst, literally.

“I will be VERY careful-oh and you shouldn’t worry so much, thanks.”

The woods near my house can make it feel like its midnight; even when the sun is shining brightly. But the woods are so beautiful and majestic they don’t seem scary at all. In the middle of the woods is a fascinating pond, the water is a clear sky blue. There is something weird about the pond though there’s no fish in it, animals don’t go within 40ft of it, and it glows a gold color. I got to the point where my mom and dad won’t let me go past (which is a huge oak tree) but, I kept going. Then, I got so far in the forest I didn’t know which way to go to get out. I kept walked for 3 or 4 miles and noticed dark shadows of strange animals starting to form.

I started to panic and felt ice cold tears running down my face; I really wanted to get back home. It started to get dark and I couldn’t see where I was going. I walked the way I thought I came then; heard a strong crack of thunder, a bright flash of lighting and it started to pour. So I ran for cover, I came to a log and climbed in. When I was climbing in my jeans tore down the side. I yelped in pain, blood was dripping down my leg. I crawled out of the log and ran, I ran until I came to the pond. I turned around to look at them they were humongous four-legged creatures. They had fierce glowing eyes; I couldn’t tell what color they were. My vision started to blur, and before I knew it I was in tears. After; I went searching for something to put on my leg. I couldn’t find anything so I used my sweatshirt. Eventually they went away, and then I started to walk closer to the pond, examining it. It seemed to be shimmering gold, I always have been wondering why. It was probably around midnight now, and suddenly all the beauty of the forest disappeared; to me it was like one of my many frighten nightmares. The floor was slippery and I didn’t want to fall, but I didn’t have to worry because before I knew it the pond sucked me in.
