Dominance

Okay, so I was thinking about this....and have been for a while.

Obviously, people who write werewolf stories have absolutely no idea how real wolves work out in the wild.

They usually have the general pack idea down, like a wolf needs a pack to survive, to find comfort from. Lone wolves usually are crazy, or not as sociable as pack wolves. And that wolves are territorial.

HOWEVER, the finer mechanics of pack hierarchy?

Y'ALL DON'T SEEM TO KNOW JACK SQUAT!!!!

Wolves in general go by dominance, the stronger they are, the better. Their ability to stare down challenges and their ability to fight is what puts them at the top.

Yet every werewolf story I read?

It's all about the bloodlines with the added bonus of dominance.

A few years ago, I went wolf crazy and tried to learned as much as I could about them. Facts, a few figures and overall interesting things about them.

And every time I get on here, I want to call people out on their misconceptions. If you're writing a werewolf story, I get the whole mate thing, because yes, wolves are generally monogamous creatures.

But the next in line being the Alpha's son? Bullshit.

You have to be related to the Alpha in some way to become the next Alpha? Bullshit.

If you're trying to keep the traditional "pack hierarchy", look it up please before you start.

An Alpha in the wild is exactly that. They are born dominant or they're not. The parents can be submissive, but their offspring could be dominant.and vice versa.

It's all about how dominant you are. It's all about the mind-fuck.

NOT about the bloodline in a real wolf pack.

Bloodlines are a purely human idea. If it's a werewolf pack? And they're supposed to be in an actual "pack",  it is a purely animal, purely wolf thing. And nine times out of ten of every story that I've read on Wattpad, the wolf has a bigger control over how their lives are run than the human.

While I'm going on about this...some facts about real Alpha Wolves

1) The reason they are Alphas? It's all about the personality, about their ability to bluff, their ability to posture and also know when it's time to step aside. Yes they fight, but sometimes these things happen without bloodshed.

2) The reason there are Alphas? They are the ones that produce offspring, and usually the ONLY ones allowed to produce offspring. They have the most social privileges.

3) During mating season, they are usually the only ones allowed to mate, they drive off anyone else that produces the pups or flat out kills the pups. Harsh but true.

4) In a hierarchy, they are the first ones to eat then it goes by the level of dominance after that.

5) Wolves are constantly posturing and changing hierarchical positions. It's not set in stone.

Get your facts straight before you start spouting crap, ESPECIALLY if you're aiming to keep it as close to a real wolf hierarchy.

And before I get arguments that they are half human, I would like to point out that nine times out of ten, the wolf behaviours have more control than the human behaviours.

Therefore, you negate ideas that are purely human, like the bloodline idea.
