Grace's p.o.v

It was late anyways so I might as well go home. I have to wake up early also since Lily is having orientation for first grade.

I find Lily and Darcy passed out on the couch. There was a noticeable line of chocolate around their mouth and I knew they had too much cake.

I pick her up and carry her in a hugging position like I used to when she was little. She was a little heavier now but I could manage. She didn't wake either since at her age, children sleep deeply.

I find Mrs. Brandis before I leave. She was on the patio with her husband. "Mrs. Brandis? Mr. Brandis?" I question not wanting to interrupt them.

They both look at me. "I think it's time for us to go home. Lily has tired herself out. The party was great by the way and thank you for inviting us," I say.

"Oh, of course. Anytime, dear. It was so nice having you here," she says to me.

"I'd say she's in a sugar coma," Mr. Brandis remarks making us laugh. "She really loved that cake," I agree.

"Thank you again, for everything," I refer to all of the good deeds they have done for my family.

"It's really no trouble. If you ever need anything, we're always here," Mrs. Brandis adds.

"You have a good night now Ms. Grace. Tell your father I said hi, too," Mr. Brandis says. "I will," I say before leaving finally.

I notice my dad was home. I'm glad he was but I know he wants to be with mom. Nan was probably with her.

Once I get inside I notice my dad was in the kitchen sitting at the table. He wasn't eating but I didn't bother seeing what he was doing. Instead I take Lily up to her room and put her to bed.

I go back downstairs and hesitate before going into the kitchen. "Hey dad," I say going to get a cup from the cabinet.

He doesn't answer so I look over at him and he was in deep thought about something while reading paperwork that had been scattered over the table for months.

"Dad," I say once more but with a louder tone. He looks up at me. "Hm?" He questions.

"Lily and I went over to the Brandis' tonight for Tom's birthday. How's mom," I say filling the cup with water.

"She's fine. Don't worry sweetie," he says as I sit at the table with him.

He immediately goes back to filling out paperwork that was probably bills.

"Tomorrow's Lily's orientation for first grade," I say. He doesn't answer but continues.

"Are you gonna go?" I question impatient. "What Grace?" He stops and looks at me annoyed while shaking his head.

"Lily's orientation. Remember?" I ask. "I thought you were taking her," he looks confused.

"Well you're her dad and I bet she'd want you to go," I say.

"I've got too much to do with work and your mom and this. I just can't do it tomorrow. You know how busy I am," he says creasing his forehead.

"I know. I'm sorry for suggesting," I say also annoyed while getting up. I can tell when my presence is unwanted.

I take my cup of water and leave. "Grace," my dad calls in regret. "I get it dad. You're too busy for us," I say on my way out.

"Goodnight," I say loudly so he can hear.

I go to my room then get ready for bed. I sat down and admired the picture of my mom. She looked so happy. I wish everything could go back to normal, when my dad actually cared about Lily and I and when my mom was my best friend. It's weird how so much can change so fast.
