September
"So where else do you go when you're beaten up?" I ask, as Luke drives us to my house.
"Around."
"Oh... Does your mom know?"
"No."
"Turn left," I order. "How's soccer?"
"...Alright."
"My name's Olivia, by the way."
You guys are partners in English and he claims to have fought for you. You think he doesn't know that?!
He looks at me for a second before his eyes are back on the road. "I know."
"I wasn't sure. Is this your mom's car?"
"Yeah."
All this time I thought Luke didn't have many friends because he didn't want to, who would've thought it was because he is the worst conversation carrier?
"Or maybe I prefer not to talk while I drive."
"Oops," I give him a cheeky grin. "Sometimes I say stuff I don't intend to."
"Is this your house?" Luke asks, choosing not to say anything about my previous comment.
"Yeah, you can park over there."
After unlocking the doorknob with my keys and typing in the pass-code thrice (I tend to lose my focus around guys like Luke), we walk into my house. "Take your shoes off over there," I tell him while slipping off my peach-coloured flats.
"I do know what manners are, Olivia."
"Don't take it personally, I tell everyone that."
"You bring people here often?" Was he making conversation with me?
"Every now and then." I shrugged. "Why?"
"Just didn't want any of your friends to show up while I'm still here." Oh. "You have a nice house."
"I know," I agreed, looking at Luke as he anilyzed the white rooms and halls we walked past with splotches of black objects every now and then- it was very simple, but screamed modern and you could tell the owners (whom I call 'Mom' and 'Dad') are very well off. It almost makes their absense worth it. "Do you want water?"
"No thanks."
"Then let's just head up to my room." He raised his eyebrows at me. "You know I don't mean for that. We can watch a movie on Netflix or something 'till it's time." He laughs and I blushed. "No, I didn't mean it that way either! Oh my God, stop laughing!"
"Alright, alright."
I open the door to my bedroom and we both walk inside. "You can sit on the bed."
"You're doing this on purpose."
I groan. "I'm not." It's only because of you, anyway.
"How so?"
It's like the world was committed to embarrassing me in front of Luke. Although, he's being a lot nicer than I expected. "Remember when I said I say things I don't mean to?"
"Uh-huh."
"This is that moment."
---
We ended up doing our homework, and I was too scared to ask him for help on mine so I silently attempted to solve math's problems until he, surprisingly, asks me a question.
"So, why were you desperate for a ride?"
"I wasn't desperate." I was, but I don't like being called desperate.
"You let a stranger into your house just so he could drive you home."
"We're not total strangers. And maybe needing a place to stay to avoid seeing your mom at home until she goes to work isn't really a good reason, but in the end you don't get grounded and I didn't have to take the bus."
"But you could've asked anyone else who would do it for free."
"There isn't anyone else." I know I had messed up by not keeping my mouth shut when Charlie obviously wanted me to but not to the point where she had avoided talking to me all day and by the time I finally realized that, it was too late to call any of my friends who can drive.
