Chapter 4 ∣ I'm Not His
-Eris
The pain in my wrist had been brought down to a dull throb, the arm that Maverick had grabbed, resting against the surface of the table. The mouthwatering smell of the pasta drifted from the bowl, the fork in my hand as I took small bites. I felt her gaze on me, Lucette glancing from me and then to the vampire with brown hair, their eyes speaking for what their thoughts were communicating.
"Eris?" I suppose that will forever be my name here, giving Lucette a sideways look out of the corner of my eye. "Why did Maverick hurt you?"
I fork dropped from my hand, clattering in the bowl as I turned my full attention on her. "Why don't you go ask the monster for yourself?"
"Don't call my brother that," Lucette sighed, frustrated with what I had said, but kept her emotions in check as she cooled her temper, "Please don't call him that. He's not. He's been broken without you and is hurt now that you have no memory of him and what you two meant to each other."
"So, what you're saying," I pushed the bowl away from me, the hunger I once had left the second she brought up things that I didn't understand. Again, why was everyone saying we had something? I don't remember him and if I did, I'm sure it wouldn't be with fond memories. "Are you saying that it's okay for him to grab me? Is it okay for him to hurt me? Because he is a vampire, he has control over me? Why bother bringing me back to this godforsaken world filled with so much death and destruction?!" I threw my hands in the air, the hurt in my chest ready to explode.
Lucette shook her head, the white ponytails falling over her chest when she said, "No, Maverick would never treat you like that...you may be human, but you're not beneath of him. You're not like other humans out there, Eris, you were once a demon...and my brother's beloved..." her chest constricted, the pain she felt for her brother was substantial, "you may not feel the connection...or you might and not understand why you are even slightly drawn to him, but he knows and he wants to help you remember-"
Pushing the chair back, it made a slight scratching sound as I stood to my feet, mumbling under my breath, "I don't want to remember...if the life I had led to my death, why would I want to thrust my new life back into that situation?"
Lucette's lips opened to respond, though there was nothing she could say to counter my comment. She knew there was truth behind my words if she knew how I died and if it were because being near him caused it, who honestly thought I would go near him again? Regardless of that warm tug in the center of my chest that made my heart flutter for a moment, his name bringing confusion, hurt, warmth, and a desirable pull that I wanted no association with.
"Why don't we just go for a walk? You haven't been outside yet," Lucette finally spoke, quickly switching the subject that I had stumped her with. It would be nice, seeing the world for the first time through this new body, taking in what the world really was like. Nodding, Lucette stood to her feet, glancing to the female vampire, and saying, "Grandma, where is-"
"In the parlor," she cut her off, "Rook wanted to speak to Clover and Ryker, something about business outside of the coven."
She acknowledged her, moving around the side of the table, and motioning me to follow her. I did, we both stepped out into the hallway and began to walk to the front doors, the grand entrance engulfing us as we neared it. To the right, there were sliding doors that were shut, muffled voices speaking on the other side.
Lucette took the handle of the front door, opening the door inward as the cool breeze touched my exposed arms, my bare feet stepping out onto the stone porch. The night had covered the Earth in a blanket of darkness, looking around and seeing the cloudy sky taking away from the brilliant stars.
