Chapter 25 ∣  Fragmented Bond

-Maverick

"Dad? How-"

My father was the first one to kneel down beside Ryker's unconscious body lying against the dungeon stone floor, taking Clover's place in the blink of an eye. Zak appeared to shake out of his anger, rushing away from Hendrix, directly slipping past myself and then my mother.

"What?" Zak's voice was filled with confusion, my father unstrapping the scythe from Ryker's back, drawing him onto his back. My mother left to check on Ryker as well, my eyes glancing from Hendrix and then to the body laying still with just barely a heartbeat left.

"It's difficult for him to breathe," my mother's voice finally broke through the silence, the eyes beneath of his lids were moving extremely quickly. His body had broken out in a cold sweat, his muscle twitching of their own accord.

Zak slowly rose to his feet, his white irises meeting with my own hazel blue ones. He asked, "Where is Clover?"

"Ryker was to watch Eris-"

"E-Eris?" Hendrix's voice was ragged, the beating his body had been through wasn't pretty. My mother hadn't spared him a second thought, her goal was to get information and he was refusing to give in. He never heard me when I spoke to Ryker directly the second my father and I walked into the dungeon.

My eyes were cold, and I narrowed them at Hendrix. I growled, "Yes, Eris. The one you helped murder. The one who actually gave a god damn shit about you and the rest of your kind, despite everything that Declan did to her. She actually sympathized and had a special place in her heart for you mutts, she cared too much about other people's wellbeing...loving when she didn't have to. You betrayed her just because she was connected to me. Yea, you hurt me, was that your goal? I'll live, but I'm afraid you won't leave this dungeon alive."

"E-Eris...h-how is she al-alive?" His voice rose a little, a flash of remorse crossing his face.

"That's none of your concern," I turned on my heels, walking away from the chained-up Alpha and joining my mother and father. I knelt across from them, my eyes searching over Ryker's body that appeared to be just hanging onto life.

"What did this?" Zak asked, just as confused as I was that there were no wounds, not a single scratch. Even in his condition, he'd recover, but that made me all the more worried about Eris.

"I don't know," my voice trailed off, "whatever did this...it had Ryker off guard, and Clover must have switched places with him. But where is she? Where is Eris?"

Zak asked, "Evie?"

"Don't worry," my mother nodded at Zak, "Lucca and I will watch over Ryker."

My father slowly lifted Ryker into his arms, all of us rising. He stated, "Unfortunately, you won't be able to take Arlynn with you...the sun rose about an hour ago."

Zak and I glanced at each other, no words having to be spoken before we were both striding out of the dungeon and up to the main floor.

Where are you Eris?

If they did that to Ryker...

"She's fine," Zak finally spoke up as the two of us neared the entryway to the front door. He was calm and collected, my own body was conflicted that even after sending a hunter to watch over her, perhaps she really was in danger...

"You sound so confident," I slipped my trench coat back on, Zak adjusting his two medium length daggers on either side of his hips. He nodded and reassured me, "A beloved of yours would have to be strong. Eris is no exception and even though she is human now, she's a damn strong one."
