Y/n: meet me? we need to talk
Chase: sure thing babygirl x im at the pool south side of town xxx
You shut your phone off and slipped into a jumper upon hearing the pitter patter of rain against the window. Jogging down the stairs you found Newt sitting on the bottom step lacing up his shoes, pulling the knot tight before tying them in a bow. You sat next to him and slipped on your boots, not needing to undo the laces before resting your head on his shoulder.
Newt wrapped his arms around you as you buried your head deeper into his neck. You sat there for a while, listening to the rain fall onto Paradise. Thunder cracked across the sky and lightning ripped it apart. No one should be out in this weather, but everyone in Paradise was used to it, they knew how to deal with storms.
The sound of Newt's phone broke through the tranquillity of the storm.
"Is that her?" you grit your teeth.
"Yep." he dug in his pocket, brought out his phone and let you read her text over his shoulder.
"'okay babyboo'," you read in disgust, imitating her voice, "seriously what the hell? 'babyboo'?" you raised your eyebrows.
He chuckled lightly, "You don't need to be jealous anymore love." he got up and kissed you, you lent in for more but he pulled back slightly, "Plus, I like it when you say it, not her." And with that he was out the door.
You smiled to yourself.

You pulled the car into the empty car park of the pool and squinted out the windscreen, the rain now coming down in sheets. You unstrapped yourself and opened the car door with a sigh, running through the car park with your head bent against the onslaught.
Once in the foyer you looked around for anyone but the place was deserted; you dug you hands deeper in your jumper pockets.
After searching both male and female changing rooms, the staff toilets and the reception you finally found Chase sitting in the deep end of the drained pool.
You made your way to the pool and the climbed down the steps in the shallow end, walking through an empty swimming pool, your footsteps echoing around the seats.
Chase didn't look at you until you sat down next to him. He watched you smooth your jeans and turn to face him, watching as his hands twiddled a loose strand from his sweater. His eyes inert as his hands quivered. It was as if emotions danced on his face; happiness and contentment slow-danced on his lips while sadness and desire waltzed in his eyes. And still you weren't sure why you were there, picking at scabs that needed to scar.
Suddenly his facade was broken as he whined your name. It was a pitiful sound, his eyes glistening as your name poisoned his lips.
"Chase." you whispered back, suddenly crying because it wasn't his fault that you fell in love with Newt or that he fell in love with Esme or that you fell in love with him or that he fell in love with you. He just got caught in the middle. If these tiles were feelings you'd fold them end over end to bring him closer to numbness.
"I know what you came here to do, and it's okay." he gave you a watery smile and gently took your hand, "You're never going to love me as much as you did when he didn't love you, and I can't stand the thought of you loving me any less." at this you threw yourself into his arms, tears streaming down your face as you clutched him. Chase grabbed your waist and pushed you onto his lap, tipping his head into your neck and letting his tears run down your shoulder and over the bump of your collar bone.
"I had a little brother, Charlie." he suddenly said, looking up and sniffing. "Everyone always said he was a spiting image of me; same hair, same eyes, same laugh."
"It sounds like you loved him very much." you smiled, using your sleeve to wipe tears away from his face.
"I did. I do." he gripped your hand, "he was six years younger than me and the only thing I had left when our parents died. We were travelling across the Scorch together when we met a band of cranks. We barely made it out alive. Charlie was badly hurt and wouldn't stop whining and made me check that he was okay. I found a bite mark on his leg." Chase choked slightly, "I thought it was no big deal, because he was immune, but as the days went by he got more and more violent, lashing out and screaming in the middle of the night. And, it turns out, that he wasn't immune."
More tears slipped down his cheeks, slowly this time, as he relived his worst memory for you in an abandoned swimming pool.
"One day when we were walking he started screaming and when I tried to shush him he lashed out. He tried to kill me, Y/n. My little brother tried to kill me."
"Chase..." you whispered, cupping his face in your hands, bringing him so close that your lips touched.
"And then, all of a sudden, he calmed down and said 'you have to kill me.' I didn't argue, Y/n, because I knew that that's what he wanted, it's what we said we'd always do if this happened. So I held Charlie's hand and shot him in the head." He murmured against your mouth, the toxicity of his words dripping from his tongue onto yours.
You held him tight to you as the thunder crashed and Chase, this lovely boy with haunted eyes, howled for his brother in your arms.
Hours later, when the storm had stopped and the sun had gone down, your phone rang. Chase wiped his eyes and gestured for you to pick up.
"Hello?" you croaked.
"Y/n? Olly's missing, I can't find her anywhere and it's getting dark." Mickey's voice cut down the line, urgent and panicked.
"Well where was she last?" you shot to your feet, Chase's eyes following you.
"I don't know!" she screamed, "I haven't seen her all day!"
"Well you're her best friend!" you screamed back.
"So are you!" she cried. You could imagine her running her fingers through her hair and stomping her foot.
"Okay! Okay. We just need to think, where might she have gone?" you began pacing, thinking about all the places Olly talked about or even mentioned in passing. There was silence on the other end for a while before Mickey took a sharp intake of breath.
"I know where she is. Oh my God oh my God I know where she is!" the muffled sound of Mickey's keys jangling came down the line, "She's at the beach." and with that she hung up.
"Chase I'm really sorry but Olly-" you started, turning around and looking at him, curled up on the floor of the pool.
"I know." he interrupted, "I heard."
"If you want me to stay I can just-"
"Y/n, go find her." he smiled sadly, "I'll be fine."
You gazed at him for a moment before bending down and kissing him fiercely, his mouth scolding yours and he kissed back. It wasn't what it had been. For the first time kissing Chase, you felt fire beneath his lips. "You're a hero, Chase, you saved your brother so much torment and I think he loves you for that." you murmured before sprinting away from him and out of the pool.
