Phone Conversation

"Christina, where you at?" I asked N'Aejah through the phone. She knew I was serious because I called her by her middle name.

"I'm at Ashley's house, I'm about to leave."

"Nah, nah, stay there. I'm coming to get you."

"You sure, Daddy?"

"Positive. I'll see you in a little bit, I love you."

"Love you too."

End of Conversation

I laced up my sneakers on the edge of the bed as the twins, Nile, and Nae sat on the bed watching a movie.

"Baby, where you going?"

"I'm getting our daughter, I won't be gone long." I kissed her forehead heading out. I got in my Range Rover and quickly pulled off.

It usually took me fifteen minutes to get to Ashley's house but it only took me eight this time. I got out and knocked on the door.

"Hi-, Chris? What are you doing here?" Ashley's mom asked.

"Just came to pick up N'Aejah. May I come in?" I asked with a toothless smile.

"Sure, sure. They're in the living room." She opened the door wider and I walked in. I went to the living room and saw them on the couch.

"Y'all would be soo cute- Hey, Mr. Brown." Ashley smiled.

"Wassup, Ashley?" I sat next to N'Aejah on the couch.

"Hey, Daddy!" She kissed my cheek, hugging me. I hugged her back looking straight ahead.

"N'Aejah, I'ma ask you this one thing, and I want you to be straight up." I looked at her. "Why you and Zachary all close and buddied up today at school?"

She sighed. "Dad, why are you always tripping about him? He is just my friend."

"I don't care, N'Aejah. When he came back around, I told you not to get any closer to him than you already were. I don't want you in the spotlight, and you all close to this boy is making you the damn hot topic of the day everywhere."

"Why do you still care what the media thinks? You always said they're in our business and hit us with crazy stories that don't even add up most of the time-"

"You're my daughter though." I interrupted. "You know I never wanted you in the media, I never wanted you to be labeled as only being my daughter. I don't want you talking to this boy anymore." N'Aejah got up huffing.

"Are we leaving?" She got her backpack.

"We sure are. Bye Ashley." I waved and we left. She got in the passenger's seat and I drove off.

"So you ain't gonna say anything to me? What was y'all even doing anyways to be that close?" I looked at her and she looked straight ahead. "Oh, you don't hear me?"

"I hear you loud and clear, Dad." She mumbled. I pulled up and we both got out. I unlocked the door and she stormed in, throwing her backpack down.

"Hey, baby, what's wrong?" Nae hugged N'Aejah.

"This is what's wrong." I showed her the picture. "I told her she won't talk to him again, and she won't."

"But Dad, why?" N'Aejah stepped in. "He's been my friend since I was four! Why are you so upset about this?"
