I sat in a real interrogation room. I was handcuffed to the desk. Jim was just in the corner of my eye arguing with a woman. Then I saw her nod and Jim came into the room sitting down in front of me.
"What I'm I doing here Gordon?" I asked just tired.
"I still want to help you. But first you got to answer my questions" he said.
"And what if I don't want your help" I suggested.
"What's your last name?" He asked refusing to actually listen to me. I looked away from him. "Just tell me your last name and we'll let you go" he said. I looked him in the eyes.
"That's not your decision Jim..." I said. He looked away then folded his hands on the desk. He knew I was right about that.
"I didn't want those kids to be locked up, I fought for them to be given clothes and homes. The mayor was the one who sent those kids away" he explained.
"Yeah, sure Jim" I said looking away from him once again.
"Use your power, see if I'm lying," he said struggling for my eye contact. I looked over at him, I didn't have to look at him to know he was telling the truth.
"Okay, you're telling the truth. So what" I said. "What does that change?" I said feeling myself about to give in. He was a good man, he also valued honesty and I respected that.
"Charlie. You've been battling a war for quite some time... I was in a war once, after you see something like that you can see war in another's eyes..." He said.
"Yeah, and how would you know that" I said.
"Because I see it in my own eyes every morning..." He said forming tears in my eyes. He'd found the way to my soul and I couldn't get him out.
"Charlie... What's your last name?" He asked finally.
"Warren," I said.
"Thank you" he said pulling himself together before leaving the room. I heard him tell someone named Ed to baby sit me. A tall skinny man slinked into the room and sat down. He was extremely unsure of most of his moves.
"Hello," he said awkwardly, fixing his glasses.
"Hi Ed," I said and suddenly he was fascinated and moved in closer to me.
"Did your super power tell you that??" He asked in a really geeky way. I could help but laugh.
"No, I heard Gordon say your name" I said.
"What number am I thinking of?? Between 1-100??" He asked.
"Ed, it doesn't work like that either," I said.
"Then, how does it work?" He questioned.
"First of all, it's not a super power. And it's just observation. Once you know how to lie, you learn to spot a liar vice versa" I said. Ed was completely amazed.
"And how do you spot a liar?" He asked pulling out a small notebook from his jacket.
"Take what you know and what the person is telling you, if something doesn't add up..." I started.
"What if you have no prior knowledge?" He asked.
"Look at their eyes, if they have too much eye contact or not enough its a sign that they are lying. Too much information. Body language. It's like reading a complicated book" I explained. He smiled and Mar notes on his paper.
"That's amazing," he commented.
Jim came back in folding a file."Ed, I need to talk to Charlie," he said. Ed scrambled to put away his items. He fixed his glasses again, smiled back at us, and left. Jim looked like he had something important to say.
"Charlie..." He started to say.
"What's wrong?" I asked. Jim's eyes started to water.
"I had this buddy back in the day, he and I practically grew up together..." he smiled for a moment. "We went to war together... He risked his life to save me. His name was Philip Warren..." He said.
"He came to Gotham just like I did, he fell in love. They prayed to have a child and finally had their prayers answered. They adopted a baby girl, times were tough, so they made some tough decisions, those of which got them both killed...." He said, then a tear went down his check.
"I couldn't save him like he saved me... I'm so sorry," he cried. I didn't know how to feel.
"He knew that he was going to die... He left you a warehouse in east Gotham and all the money he had to his name... He also left you a note..." He said handing me a piece of paper. I grabbed it and began to read it.
"Charlie, by the time you read this I'm long gone and you managed to get yourself into trouble. I want you to know that although we weren't your biological parents we loved you more than anything and that's why we write to you now. Find Jim Gordon... He is, and always was, your legal guardian" I looked up at Gordon."What does this mean?" My heart stopped for a split second. I couldn't understand. It was his hand writing, even as I read it, it sounded like him. Tears formed in my eyes.
"It means we have to stick together. Your father was.... is my best friend" he corrected himself making it harder not to cry. "When I saw you at fish's the other week I saw your father in you... You two both have that look on your faces," he smiled and knew just the one he's was talking about. I laughed and wiped away the tears.
"Come live with me. I can't tell you it'll be perfect, but I can say you'll be cared for," Jim said. I took no time to think.
"Yes"
