                                                                         Chapter 15

They were sitting in the truck eating burgers when Joanie walked by. Trevin hurried and grabbed Garrett’s shoulder.

“Hey there’s your girlfriend,” he said sarcastically. He started laughing as Garrett dropped down so low he was practically squatting on the floor of the truck.

Joanie was a girl that some of the boys had introduced him to, trying to get him layed. He was smarter than that and wasn’t about to touch her. Unfortunately for him, he had a hard time being rude to girls. She took his kindness as affection and believed that he liked her a lot more than he really did. She’d been following him around to every rodeo for the past few weeks, even to the point of answering his phone when he was riding or not around. He had a feeling she’d been screening his calls and texts but he hadn’t caught her in the act to prove it.

At about 5’4” with platinum blonde hair, she was pretty good looking and a lot of guys would jump at a chance to be with her. There were also a lot of guys that knew just how easy she was and weren’t willing to give into more than a one night stand. Garrett had a hard time even putting up with her, but didn’t know how to get rid of her without being flat out rude.

Ducking under the seat wasn’t enough to deter her though. She recognized the truck and walked over. Opening the passenger side door, she noticed him squatting down. Crap. She was giving him one of those looks.

“Oh so you are in here. What in the world are you doing?” Like she didn’t know.

“Oh… I dropped my phone under the seat; I was trying to find it.” He didn’t sound very convincing.

“Oh alright. Well where are you boys headed now?”  Trevin spoke up before Garrett had the chance to come up with a lie.

            “Headed to a party.”

“Actually we were thinking of heading home for a few days before going to the next rodeo,” Garrett jumped in.

“Oh nonsense, you have nothing at home waiting for you. Let’s go to the party.”

“Well we don’t really have any room.” he was desperate to get her to go away.

“Sure you do. I’ll sit in the middle.” There was no winning. It was settled.

Once they got to the party, Trevin backed his truck up to the fire and they all got out. Garrett tried to walk fast to get away from Joanie but she walked just as quickly and wrapped her arm around his waist. This was not going to be good.

The smell of smoke and beer lingered in the air as they walked toward the fire. The bonfire was huge and about half a dozen people had backed their trucks up to it to sit on the tailgates. A few people were gathered around talking about the rides made earlier that day and having a few beers together. Garrett recognized a lot of the people there except for a few hanging out close to the fire. But even with the dozens of people scattered out around him, there was one person that stood out. Nayvee.
