Chapter 20

Nayvee’s face got pale and she glanced at me, a worried look on her face. She was about to answer me when the filly jerked the lead rope hard. Nayvee was unsuspecting of the rough movement and the soft lead, slipped quickly through her fingers a few inches before she caught her grip. In all the backwards leaping, the little black hurricane had managed to reach her mama and was now trying to duck underneath her, searching for safe cover from the monsters and their strange contraptions.

In a moment of panic the mare began to kick behind her. Garrett was trying to calm her down as her back feet whipped out, narrowly missing Nayvee, as she was pulled to the side in safety. Letting go of the lead rope, she turned into the warm arms surrounding her. She thought it was Garrett but looking up she froze, realizing that in the heat of the moment, Pace had jumped the fence and came to her rescue. Her thought process was going a million miles an hour trying to contemplate how she was going to keep the peace. Realizing that Pace’s steely eyes were glaring at Garrett only made her hesitate more. She tried to step back away from him, but his grip only tightened. He grabbed hold of her upper arm and turned her towards his truck, not even turning his gaze from Garrett. Garrett’s wheels were twisting in his head viciously as he watched this kid he had never seen before, push Nayvee around. He was too stunned to even defend her when she gave him an apologetic look and turned to walk in the direction the kid was herding her. Neither of them spoke until she was in the truck and out of earshot.

“Put her in danger like that again and it will be the last thing you do,” Pace spat. Garrett quickly replied.

“I don’t know who the hell you think you are but if I ever see you push her around like you’re in charge of her again and you won’t ever do it again because I’ll cut your damn hands off.”

                                                                        Nayvee

I wasn’t sure what to do. I was hoping to talk to Garrett and be away from him before Pace showed up. I had no idea he was that close already. He had to have left a long time before he ever sent that last message. I watched as they faced off together. I was worried there was going to be a fight, and if it would do any good for me to jump back out of the truck. I assumed that since they didn’t start arguing until I had shut the truck door, they must not have wanted me to hear. This only made me want to know more. Garrett was seriously going to hate me now. I was just considering giving him a chance to prove that us together wasn’t a mistake. Now I really have no idea how to make this work. Especially because I really like Pace and there’s no sensible reason to not be with him, except for the fact that I’ve never gotten over Garrett. Honestly it wasn’t fair to either of them. This freaking sucks.

I watched them get closer and closer to each other, and more irate by the second. Finally Garrett pointed at Pace and then threw his arm toward me, sitting in the truck, and Pace turned and walked towards me. Jerking open the drivers side door, he slid quickly into the seat and slammed the door shut with a resounding thud. His hands on the steering wheel, he looked out the windshield with his eyebrows furrowed together. Relaxing, he turned his head towards me and gave me a dazzling smile, as if nothing bad had just happened at all.
