                                                                              Chapter Ten

I didn’t stop running until I hit the barn door. Pushing it open I marched down the aisle and threw myself into tequilas stall. He threw his head up and snorted as if to say ‘what’s the hurry’. I walked over to the corner and sat down in the warm straw. Tequila turned and nuzzled me before turning back to his dinner. Everything was quiet as I thought over what just happened. I sure was good at making a mess of things. And I was angry at myself because I’m usually never this dramatic and it made me mad that one guy could change that practically overnight. Just then I heard the door open and soft thudding across the floor.

“Any particular reason you’re sulking back here instead of hanging out with your friends? It doesn’t make you a very good host,” Garrett said it with a flat voice and I knew he was irritated as hell. I wasn’t exactly sure why but I was hoping to find out, plus I was a little irritated myself. Trying my best to control my temper before I made things worse, and biting back what I really wanted to say, I replied to him.

“I’m not sulking I’m just sitting here for a minute. I needed a break away from Brady”. It was only a half truth but I was hoping for the minute it would do.

“Oh stop the act Nayvee. You’re so full of bullshit I can smell it from here. How stupid do you think I am? Drop the fake attitude and try to be honest with me for once.” Yes. He was very mad. His voice seemed to get louder and shake more, the more he spoke.  I could tell his temper was rising fast, but If he wasn’t careful mine would rise quicker.

“What the hell is your freaking problem Garrett?” He sat there and stared at me for a minute as if debating if he wanted to say what was on his mind or not.

“You’re my freaking problem Nayvee! Do you think I don’t know your little plan? That right now I should be so damn jealous that the air around me should be green? Who do you think you’re playing? I’m not a fool. From now on keep your plans to yourself and leave me the hell out of them. I have no interest in them and I sure as shit don’t want to be a part of them. Why don’t you just stick with Brady? You two seem to be a pretty fairly matched couple.” He said it all so fast he had to stop and take a breath for a minute.

“Where did you hear that?” I said through gritted teeth. I was really struggling to control my temper. I was so mad at the moment things were starting to blur.

“Does it matter? I don’t know Nayvee how many people have you told?” he said it sarcastically, almost as if he were making a joke out of it. Speaking slowly to keep my control I repeated it again.

“Where did you hear that?” This time when he replied he looked almost guilty.

“I went in the house to help you and Allie with the drinks and I overheard you talking. When I heard your voices I stopped to listen instead of walking in.” This made me lose it. I couldn’t hold my temper in any longer.

“You think you know everything don’t you! You’re the smartest damn person on the freaking planet! Well you know what they say about eavesdroppers, they never hear good of themselves. Had you walked in a minute earlier, or even stayed one minute later, you would have heard the part of the conversation where i said I didn’t even invite Brady tonight. I told him under no circumstances was he coming and I was hoping it would be just me and you. How if I had been some superficial bitch like Tiffany, I would have played like it was a game. But I’m not like that!” I stood there fuming for a second, waiting to see if he would say anything. When he didn’t I knew I’d had enough. “Maybe you’re right. Right now I’d rather be with Brady. As much of an arrogant dickhead as he is, he hasn’t jumped to any wild conclusions about me, except for the idea that maybe I wanted to hang out with him. You know, maybe you should take a leaf out of his book.” I pushed past him just as the bay mare- who was stalled next to tequila- reached around to take a bite out of his shoulder. It was enough of a distraction for me to high tail it out of there before I had to endure anymore.
