Chapter One

The Passion Pit

"What would you like sweetheart?" the woman from the passion pit diner asked. I tip toed a bit trying to get a better glance at the menu but I felt like if I take any longer trying to decide what I want to get this lady will snap at me.

"Um, I'll take two milkshakes please." I replied.

"What flavor will the milkshakes be darlin'?"

"Vanilla and strawberry." She handed me a number and gestured me to stand to the side to wait for my order.

Today is December 18, 1955. The passion pit was brimming with teenagers. The reason being is that the hit flick of the year, Tarantula, has just came out. I came with my friend, Beverly, and her boyfriend Bryce. I disliked the idea of being a third wheel but it's better than staying home while everyone is out having fun.

I decided to make my way towards the jukebox while I waited for my order and looked for a song. I pulled out a few coins from my purse and inserted them into the machine. I selected the song Wild Wild Young Men by Ruth Brown. It is one of my favorite songs.

As the song began to play I started to dance, swaying my poodle skirt from side to side. I got a little carried away in focusing on the music that I didn't even realize people started to dance along with me. I noticed that Lucas Wade was amongst those people. Lucas was the heartthrob at our high school. His own little gang made every girls' heart melt within seconds. Lucas, being the head leader, got whatever his little heart desired. And his little heart desired girls most of the time.

As I made my way through the little crowd that was forming to pick up my order, I noticed Lucas was following me.

"Nice song choice sweetheart." Lucas smirked. He leaned on his back and rested his elbows on the table counter.

"Thank you. I do have a boss taste in music don't I?" I sassed. I got my order from the counter and made my way out. Before I opened the door I gave Lucas a wink and proceeded towards the car where Beverley and Bryce were.

This isn't the first time I have an encounter with Lucas. He's always flirting with every gal he sees but sometimes I do in fact take these little moments to heart. Sometimes I feel like he may like me but then I see the way he is and think again.

"Took you long enough missy." Beverly smiled. "The movie is starting soon."

I handed Beverly her milkshake and made my way towards the passenger seat. I enjoined Beverly to take the back seat with Bryce just incase things got a little carried away. I already have a mental note that if anything does happen in that back seat while I'm trying to enjoy the movie, I would just walk out back into the diner.

I ignored the previews of the up coming flicks that were flashing on the big screen before me. I'm curious to see where Lucas was and if his entire gang was here. My parents didn't approve of guys like him obviously but I simply could not care less about their opinion. Their definition of a perfect boy for me would be a preppy boy.

"I'll be back guys." I said turning towards Beverly and Bryce. They were so into each other that they didn't even notice I even said anything.

I got out the car and closed the door. I made my way between the other cars trying to find Lucas's car. His father gave him his old 1947 Cadillac Series 61 convertible rear that Lucas fixed up very nicely. He painted the car an arresting red like color that was very meticulous.

I passed by multitudinous couples making out before my eyes caught ahold of that famous Cadillac. I adjusted my hair and proceeded towards the car.

"Well well well look who couldn't resist me." Lucas tittered. He made his way towards me and gestured the rest of the guys who weren't occupied with girls to follow him. They gathered around Lucas while scrutinizing my every move.

"Don't be too full of yourself babe." I smirked. The guys around us were filling the air with "oo's" and encouraging Lucas to say something back but he didn't. He just smirked and sat on the hood of his car. He gestured for the rest of the guys to "get lost." He patted the empty space next to me gesturing me to sit next to him.

"So what brings a dolly like you 'round here?" he whispered into my ear while caressing my cheek.

"Well let's just say I was hangin' around with a couple of wet rags that just care about make out sessions." I pulled out a cigarette and offered Lucas one.

"That's a big tickle baby. Why'd you go third wheeling 'round with wet rags?" I pulled out a lighter to light up our cigarettes. Lucas inhaled the toxic chemicals and released the smoke into the air.

I shrugged my shoulders and focused my attention on the flick that was just about to begin. Lucas attempted to wrap his arm around my waist but I always shifted out of his reach to stop him from fulfilling his intention. I knew exactly what kind of guy Lucas was and I'm more than willing to play his own game as well. I can tell this is going to be a long night.

"You should have seen your face Lily." Lucas laughed. "The flick was not scary at all."

"Ha ha ha very funny Lucas." I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms.

"I didn't mean to rattle your cage baby."

"I should get going. I need to find Beverly and Bryce." I stated. They are my ride and if I arrive home with anyone else my parents will surely have a fit.

"You can't leave baby. The fun is just about to begin." he smiled and grabbed my hand leading me to his little group of friends. I feel like such a fream right now. I've never been surround by a large group of greasers alone before so I can't help but feel vulnerable and a bit intimidated.

"Don't worry babe. We don't bite" someone stated. I can tell by the tone of his voice that he was smirking.

"Everyone this is Lily, Lily this is the gang." Lucas addressed. My thoughts were filled with a bit of fear but I trust Lucas... well sort of.

"It's nice to meet you guys- Lucas I really should go." I pressed. Lucas tightened his grip on my hand, a gesture telling me that I'm not leaving any time soon. I took a deep breath trying to calm my heart rate.

I looked at Lucas then back over my shoulder and notice a guy maneuvering his car next to Lucas's car.

"Lucas, who's that?" I wondered. I tapped Lucas's shoulder gesturing him to look back.

"Oh boy. It's about time that kid showed up." his jaw clenched and he loosened his grip from my small hand and made his way towards the car. I didn't even think about running away. I got myself into this mess and Lucas isn't someone you would want to mess with. He has a short temper and he's capable of fulfilling numerous wrong doings.

The guy in the car opened the door and did a little handshake with Lucas. Then they both took out their combs and glided .it through their hair with the grease that was already on there. They both started ?talking and glanced at me from time to time. Lucas tilted his head an indication for me to head to where he now stands.

"So you're the famous Lily Carter." the stranger implied. I noticed he had wasted girls in his car.

"It's um nice to meet you too... and you are?" I asked, confusion laced in the air. I couldn't really see his face all that well due to the very bad lighting the passion pit had.

"That's for me to know and for you to find out baby girl." he whispered into my ear. His voice was very dulcet and raspy. I shivered from both the coldness of the air and his breath touching my skin. He walked past me and proceeded to greet the others in Lucas's gang.

I tried to take another glance at the wasted girls in his car but Lucas blocked me from doing so. I felt sorry for them. I don't know why but I did.

"Don't worry about them Lily. They'll be fine." Lucas assured. The smirk on his face said otherwise. "Just worry about yourself princess and you'll be fine." he continued.
