Chapter Eleven

Lonely Hearts Club

"I don't know Alexa. Yes I know but ... okay but you know I don't really do school dances. Well I know I said I was considering it but I have no one to go with." I tried to explain to my friend Alexa but she was being really stubborn.

"I told you already, Zayn told me over dinner that he didn't want to go and he made his point quite clear." I informed her once again. Her only advice she gave me was that I shouldn't let a boy ruin my fun especially since I will be graduating this year.

She was right in my mind but my heart was aching for something that wasn't even there.

Ignoring my thoughts and feelings, I went to my closet and took out the new navy dress my mother bought for me. It was very similar to a dress I adored in one of her Vogue magazines.

"You know I could always be your date Lily." My father remarked.

"No, it's alright dad. If that were the case I'd rather not go at all." I playfully remarked back.

I stared out the window of my father's car and began to feel gloomy. It was Zayn's fault for making me feel so out of place tonight. But if there's anything that I have learned from powerful female roles in movies is to forget that you're hurt, put on some red lipstick, and break a few hearts. That's exactly what I attend to do.

~

"Please be careful Lily and if anyone messes with you I have a gun that's ready to be put into some good use.." My dad yelled out to me as I walked out the car. I knew that his intention was to embarrass me. "And make sure that Louis boy sticks to his promises or else." He went on to say.  I still don't know why my parents have the pre-conceived idea that Louis and I have something going on.

I walked slowly into the gymnasium as if it were a foreign place to me. The sight of young couples ready to enjoy a wonderful night with one another irked me.

"You smell good Lily."  a familiar voice mimicked.

"Ha ha very funny." I stated coldly.

"Aw c'mon I'm just messing you." Harry laughed.

"Why are you even here?" I asked. His face expression changed and I realized my words came out  the wrong way. "I didn't mean it like that Harry, I meant why are you here if this isn't your school dance?" I corrected myself.

"Well a couple of little birds told me that a girl by the name of Lily Carter would be alone tonight since her prince charming bailed out on accompanying her to a simple school dance."

"And?" I pestered.

"And .. I thought well since I wasn't doing anything.. You know I would take his place for the night." I found it cute how he was shy yet his intentions were so bold.

"Well you're no James Dean but I guess you'll do." I smirked.

"You're right Lily," Harry smirked back, "I'm no James Dean but I can try to be.. for you."

Harry neared me as he got me right were he wanted me to be, with my back near the gymnasium wall. A classic move.

I was in no mood to escape because he filled the empty gaps of what was aching inside me but it was all wrong.

He neared his plump lips near my neck as I wrapped my arms around his neck. I felt like I was betraying Zayn but he betrayed me in a way and we aren't even going steady. I shouldn't be worrying for what isn't even real.

"Come dance with me." he whispered. He didn't even let me answer. He pulled away slowly from me and grabbed my hand, leading me to the dance floor.

Only You by The Platters began to play and I figured that it was truly a coincidence. I felt awkward slow dancing with Harry but he guided me perfectly. The way his arms held me tight felt right. My heart fluttered a mile a minute and I was nervous that he was able to feel how fast my heart was beating because of him.

"You're my dream come true. My one and only you.." Harry whispered along with the song. I held him close to me has possible and for once I felt happy again.

My intentions of breaking hearts quickly vanished. His heart is one I do not attend to break. Such a fragile and beautiful soul he is. He was better than James Dean.

"Nice seeing you here Harry." We both loosened our grip from one another while still dancing and turned around to see Lucas with his date. It seems like my happiness can merely last a few minutes until it can be broken by the ones who seek my attention in a wrongful way.

"Nice seeing you too Lucas." He replied.

"It takes a lot of nerve coming over here doesn't it?" Lucas smirked.

"It was worth it." Harry harshly replied.

"You don't mind if I finish dancing the rest of the song with Lily do you? Of course you don't" Lucas grabbed me and handed his partner to Harry. What upset me was that Harry didn't even bother to stop him.

"Nice to see you again princess." Lucas had his arms were Harry had his a few moments ago. It didn't have the same affect.

I didn't even bother to answer him. I wondered how they knew each other.

"Quiet much babe? Are you upset that your boy toy isn't here?" Lucas grinned.

"Beverly was right about you." I whispered sadly. I miss her so much.

"You look beautiful tonight Lily." Lucas lowered his hand down my backside and I knew his intentions. Harry didn't have to tell me I looked beautiful, he showed me.

"Leave me alone Lucas. I don't want you." I tried to get out of his grip yet again.

"Every girl wants me babe. As a matter of fact you wanted me a few weeks ago didn't you Lily?" I stayed quiet.

"Thought so.."

"Songs over, come on Lily." Harry broke away Lucas's grip from me.

"Let's go Lucas." The girl that came with Lucas suggested.

"Be careful Harry, I don't mind negotiating with you and your gang again. Just keep that in mind."

I broke away from Harry's grip and headed outside. I found a bench and lit a cigarette. The only person I want to be with now is him and only him and yet he always slips out of my reach.

"Lily come back inside." Harry commanded. I ignored his plea and with that he decided to sit next to me.

"Harry can I ask you something?"

"Yes?"

"What is love?"

He stayed quiet for a moment but went on to say, " I don't know really but I think I love this one girl. She's really beautiful. Like a walking painting admired daily by people who under appreciate her and what she has to offer to this world. She makes me happy although I'm afraid she hasn't got the fainest idea that she even has such an affect on me. I try my best to be better than the guys she fancies but it still isn't enough and I'm afraid it will never be enough."

I wasn't born yesterday so I knew he was talking about me.

"You should leave Harry."

"I'm not leaving." He replied.

I looked at him while I inhaled the last of my cigarette.

"You're going to end up broken so consider this a favor from the one girl you love." I got up and threw my cigarette on the ground. I guess I contradicted myself tonight. Like a walking painting he said. He was wrong more like a walking paradox.
