Chapter Twenty One - Just in Case

~Vaughn's POV~

Shoot. Now what? I tried to control myself as I heard the doorbell ringing. I really forced myself to let go of Heart as she made her way at the front door. I heard her saying 'Jackson' .

That man again? I came out of the kitchen annoyed. I heard their voices at the living room.

'Can I invite you to dinner?' the man asked. I peeped at them and saw his hand over Heart's shoulder. No, you didn't. I said to myself clenching my fists ready to devour my prey.

'Sure, I would love to.' Heart said with a smile and saw her eyes softened. He hugged her and she responded.

Something within me ached. I put my right hand on my chest and decided to leave.

She's just your friend Vaughn. And you're just a friend of her. Nothing else. The sentences I repeated to myself as I drove off to nowhere.

~Heart's POV~

I heard Katy calling me from downstairs. Yup, that's my cue to go. Tonight is my dinner date with Jackson. I half ran through the stairs and found him at the reception area.

'Hi there!' he scanned me from head to toe then gave me a wide smile. I laughed at his reaction. I'm wearing a plain knee-length peach dress and applied minimal make up to look natural. 'You're still lovely after all this years.' he said crossing the distance between us.

'You're not bad yourself.' I grinned. He then held my gaze.

'Ah guys, you're gonna be late.' Katy coughed rolling her eyes.

Jackson and I awkwardly waved at her embarrassed of our actions. Before we get to the door, my best buddy put something in my bag. I glared at her and she likewise.

As Jackson drives, I curiously opened my bag and searched for whatever it is that Katy placed inside. A pepper spray? My eyes widened and opened my phone to found out that she also texted me. 'Just in case.' she indicates. I mentally face palmed myself.

We arrived at a familiar posh restaurant and Vaughn's face crossed my head. I swung my head erasing him from my thought.

'Is everything okay, Heart?' Jackson asked looking at me worriedly as he guides me inside the establishment.

'Yes, everything's fine.' I lied forcing a sweet smile. His eyes became soft. He assisted me on sitting down across the table.

'Come on, what's bothering you?' he insisted at the same time scanning the menu.

'W-work.' I said covering up the truth bringing my eyes down at the menu.

'Some things never change, huh.' he commented then placed our orders to the server. 'Tell me Heart. How are you?' his full attention on me.

'I'm great Jackson. Been to...for the last few years.' I honestly told him meeting his stare.

'Why the changed of appearance? I mean, it definitely suits you obviously. But why?' he asked as he started to eat the main course.

'It's my hair only. I don't know. Maybe, it's me leaving the past behind.' disclosing what I feel.

'Well, I was part of your past.' He weakly said.

'That's not what I mean silly.' I replied smiling.

'Oh, I get it. Don't worry. That's great to hear. I'm really happy for you Heart. The brown hair fits you by the way.' he winked at me.

'Thanks.' I said grinning and grateful for him not mentioning the dreadful incident back then.

We spent the night coping up with each other's experiences feeling that it's been a lifetime.

'Care to dance?' he asked me finishing our chat as he hold my left hand and stood up.

'Sure.' I replied quickly.

As we started dancing, the music changed.

And everything that I do is out of lovin' you

I really enjoyed this night. I can't deny that. Jackson has been sweet and nice to me all night. He never rushed me into things. He drove me home and just gave me a peck on the head. His gesture somewhat touched me.
