You and Malfoy stand side-by-side at the back of the Potions classroom as the door bursts open and Ron Weasley and Harry Potter come running in, late. "Sorry, sir," Potter says to Professor Slughorn, the Potions teacher. "Do you have any books left? Ron and I haven't got ours yet."

"Yes, yes, in the cabinet," the professor says, pointing behind himself to the cupboard at the front of the room. Potter and Weasley rush over and scrabble for the newer book, and the professor begins to talk.

"Well, class, today we are learning about different types of potions. Now, can anyone tell me what's in this cauldron here?" He lifts the lid of one of them, and the smell of cinnamon and flowers floats out and drifts over to you. All of the girls, Gryffindor and Slytherin, start to slowly walk toward it. Except for you.

Hermione Granger's hand shoots up. The professor calls on her. "Well professor, that is Amortentia, which is the strongest love potion known to wizardkind. Everyone smells something different. For example, I smell...freshly mowed grass and spearmint..." She glances behind her. "...toothpaste."

"Yes, Miss Granger." Slughorn says, putting the lid back on the cauldron. All of the girls stop moving. "Very powerful, very dangerous."

Parvati Patil raises her hand. "Professor, what's that?" She points to a small vial of a potion that sometimes glows silver, sometimes gold.

"Ah, yes," the professor says, taking it in his hand. "This is Felix Felicis, also known as Liquid Luck. One sip, and you'll find all your endeavors succeed." At that, Malfoy stands up straight from where he'd been slouching against the wall, the ring on his finger glinting. You send him a suspicious glance. What is it that he wants to do that's so important that he needs that potion? "I am giving away a small portion of it as a reward for anyone who can brew a perfect batch of living death."

As you all begin working, you think about what you had smelled when the love potion was uncovered. Once Malfoy comes back from getting a few more ingredients for his potion, you catch a waft of cinnamon and flowers. The smell of the love potion. Your face heats as you realize what that means. But it can't be true. You hate Malfoy! What can this mean?

Once time is up, Professor Slughorn tests Potter's potion first. "It's perfect!" he exclaims, presenting Potter with the vial of Liquid Luck.

You are surprised to find yourself slightly disappointed. As you consider why, you realize that if you had won it, you would have given it to Malfoy.
