Based off this prompt:  "I can't stand it here."  -  Maybe somewhere where Lucas is with his new girlfriend...

~set in the later years of high school, maya and lucas dated for a while but broke up~

Maya pushes her hair back and sighs. "Farkle, this is too hard," she moans.

"You know how to do this, Maya, you learnt it yesterday!" Farkle replies.

They're in the library, and Farkle is helping Maya study for biology.

"But why is it 4n? Why not just n? And why are we doing maths anyway, this is bio!"

"2n is how many chromosomes each cell has," he begins, but Maya interrupts him.

"N isn't even a number, Farkle,"

He sighs. "Do you want my help or not?"

She nods and pouts at him.

"Then listen!"

So she does. She doesn't even find biology that hard, she just wanted an excuse to not sit with them at lunch. Almost as if her thoughts can summon the devil, she hears a high pitched laugh. She turns around quickly and it's them, Lucas and Bree.

Who names their daughter after cheese? Maya wonders.

"Maya? Earth to Maya? Are you listening to me?" Farkle waves a hand in Maya's face to get her attention back — he hasn't noticed Lucas and Bree yet.

"Yeah, what?" She says distractedly, slouching in her chair and resting her head in her hands.

"Why isn't cytokinesis considered apart of meiosis and mitosis?" He repeats.

"What?"

"Maya,"

"I don't know, I—" but she stops speaking when she hears Bree laugh again. She looks around at them again and now they're kissing. She feels as if someone has punched in the stomach. "I need to go, Farkle," she says, standing up.

"What? But Maya your test is tomorrow!" He protests.

"I just— I can't stand it here," she motions to Lucas and Bree, before walking out.

Farkle wonders how he could've missed them as he watches Maya walk out.

He walks up to them. "Hey guys,"

Lucas and Bree look up at him. "Hey Farkle," they say.

"What's up?" Lucas asks him.

"Lucas, can I, uh, speak to you?"

"Sure," Lucas says, staying seated.

"In private?" Farkle says, amazed at Lucas' complete obliviousness.

"Oh, okay," Lucas stands up and walks away with Farkle.

"Have you talked to Maya lately?" Farkle asks, once he decides they are far enough away from Bree.

"No, we broke up, remember," Lucas raises his eyebrows at Farkle.

"I know that! I just mean..." Farkle sighs, "you should talk to her, okay?"

"She broke up with me, Farkle, not the other way round." Lucas reminds him angrily.

"So? It doesn't mean this isn't hard for her, okay?! And you being with her-" he points over at Bree "- 24/7 isn't helping. Stop being so self centred and go talk to her!" Farkle hadn't meant to explode, but god Lucas could be thick. Farkle stomps off, grabs his books and leaves.

Lucas hasn't even wondered what it's like for Maya, he'd just assumed... she'd broken up with him, broken his heart, he hadn't thought it'd be hard on her.

He walks out of the library, and jogs down the corridor, he spots her around the corner, sitting on a bench. "Maya!"

She looks up, and frowns. "Lucas?"

"Yeah, it's me," he sits down on the bench next to her.

She laughs. "I know it's you, idiot."

He smiles at that.

"Are you okay, Maya?" He asks after a moment, no longer smiling.

"Farkle sent you?"

"Sort of,"

"Figures."

"Maya, I...," he sighs. "Why didn't you say anything if you don't like me and Bree being together?"

"Lucas we broke up less than two months ago. We were together for almost a year. Of course it's going to bother me when you date someone else, why should I have to say anything?"

"You broke up with me, Maya,"

"It was mutual!" She fires back.

"No it wasn't," he replies, "that break up was a lot of things, but it wasn't mutual."

"Okay, then," she looks away from him, "I'm sorry."

He takes her hand and squeezes it. "You don't need to be sorry,"

She looks at him, and opens her mouth to say something but decides not to, and shuts it.

"What?" Lucas asks.

She shakes her head. "Nothing." She retracts her hand from Lucas'. "You should get back to Bree,"

"Okay," he says quietly, standing up, "I'll see you around?"

"Yeah," she responds, just as quiet, "see you around."

She watches as he walks down the corridor and around the corner, and feels a lump rising in her throat and tears in her eyes. Wiping her eyes defiantly, and swallowing her sadness, she stands up and walks in the opposite direction.
