That night Marigold lay in her nest struggling to sleep. What did Snow mean they will attack at midnight? Did the rest of SnowSet colony know about this?! Marigold's thoughts wondered to Lightning.
He seemed so nice, like someone she could trust. Was that all just some sort of cover for this plan of Snow's? The thought saddened Marigold, she liked him. As she kept thinking about the black tom she felt her insides stir.
The same feeling she felt when he looked at her in Snow's den, what was it? Was she sick? No she felt fine... Marigold pushed it off. But her thoughts lingered to him, and this time it wasn't just funny feelings, she remembered something he had said to her on the first day she met him, the day when he had told her Snow couldn't be trusted.
"It all makes sense now!" Marigold whispered.
Lightning, Cocoa's story, the forbidden room! Things started to fit together like a puzzle, except one piece was still missing and Marigold knew how to find it.
Marigold crawled out of her nest and wandered over to Lightning's room down the pure ones tunnel.
His room was smaller, it had bright leaf-fall covered leaves draped against the walls and bright yellow stones were trimming the room. His nest had yellow feathers woven into the bracken and moss.
Marigold approached him in his nest and padded him with her paw.
"Lightning! Get up!" She whispered into his ear.
The black tom stirred and opened a amber eye.
"What are you doing Marigold?" He asked.
"Remember what you told me all those moons ago?! That how Snow couldn't be trusted?! Well now I know the truth and I can figure out even more if you sneak into the Sunset Colony with me!" She replied.
"What?! How do you know all this stuff?!" Lightning meowed jumping to his paws.
"It's a long story, but, will you come with me? Will you help me uncover the truth?" Marigold asked.
"Marigold you have no idea how long I've been waiting for someone to ask me that." Lightning replied.
Marigold smiled. "Let's go before dawn comes, we can be back before anybody wakes up."
Lightning nodded and led her silently throughout the tunnels, when they were I'm the main room Marigold looked up at the hole in the ceiling. The full moon really does shine, even in the darkest tunnels.
"What are you two doing?" A voice meowed from behind. Marigold and Lightning turned with lightning fast reflexes and spotted the ginger pelted, white muzzled trainee known as Foxy.
"We were just going out for some night hunting, the real question what are you doing?" Lightning meowed pointing his ears at her.
"I was.. I was told to protect the tunnels all night as an assignment from Tiger." Foxy replied.
"Well then you better get back at it." Lightning meowed swallowing a growl. Foxy gave them one last soulless green glare before turning away and vanishing into the darkness.
Marigold gave Lightning a look of thanks and the two padded out of the tunnels and out onto the grass.
"Do you know where the Sunset Colony is?" Marigold asked. Lightning nodded.
"Once I got to close to the "border" and some of them chased me off, this was when I was still loyal of course so I traced them back to their tunnel." He meowed. "Then lead the way." Marigold meowed.
Lightning began to run down the forest line, Marigold ran but having short legs it was hard to keep up with him.
Lightning led her onto the streets at one point and then backed up into the woods agin, he stopped once he reached
A big oak tree.
Marigold caught up to him and halted beside him. The roots of the tree were upturned and created a hole leading into the ground.
"This is it." Lightning meowed not looking up from the tunnel.
The two cats looked down into the darkness of the tunnel, and padded in, ready to take on the world.
