It was a rainy Saturday night, Sammy was riding shotgun with me as we rode down the slick road, radio blaring.
"Where's our next hunt, Sammy?" I ask, glancing over at him.
He looks down at the map, "there were reports of disturbances a few hours from here that sound kinda fishy."
"How fishy?"
"Well, apparently it has to do with a woman...who keeps coming into town crying of a ghost coming into her house and assaulting her sexually. Which could happen, but I doubt it's a ghost. I'm thinking demon or poltergeist."
I knocked my head back and laughed, "a poltergeist getting frisky with the living. Man, our fun just never stops."
"Dean! Look out!" Sammy's voice urged me to tap the brakes as I spin the wheel. When we came to a stop, Sam unbuckled his seat belt as fast as he could and jumped out of the Impala.
"What the hell??" I turned my head and watched him walk over to the little boy standing in the middle of the road. My eyes widened as I followed suit and went to my brother and the kid.
"Can you tell me your name?" Sammy was kneeling down in front of the boy, hands on his shoulders.
The little boy looked about five, with short brown hair that looked a little shaggy, bright green eyes with flecks of gold and silver swirled around the iris, soft tiny facial features and he was wearing a hospital gown.
"What about your parents? Do you know their names or your address?" Sammy was still questioning him. The little boy shook his head softly.
"Sam, could I speak with you for a second?" We stepped away from the boy, but kept our eyes on him.
"We obviously can't leave him here, Dean."
I threw my hands up, "wait a minute, I wasn't suggesting it. But maybe dropping him off at a police station..." my voice drifted off.
Sam kept his eyes trained on the kid, "I don't know...there's something..off. I'm getting a strong vibe about him, man. I think we should keep him with us. Maybe we can get him to tell us more."
I gave him a long, hard look. "This isn't a puppy, Sam. I don't want to get arrested for kidnapping."
Sam waved me off and walked back to the boy, "we're gonna take you with us, ok? You're lucky we found you. The world has some sick people in it." He gently reached for the little boy's hand, "but you'll be safe with us." The little boy sprung forward and wrapped his arms around Sam's waist and started sobbing.
Sam's eyes grew the size of saucers as he looked over at me. I shrugged silently, considering I was just as lost as him. "Hey, hey, it's okay. Let's get to the car and you can nap. I think we have a blanket and pillow back there." The boy tightened his grib but agreed to walk to the car. It seemed Sam had found a new leechy companion.
When we got the kid all set up in the back and on the road, he was smooth out. "Poor guy..must've been exhausted. I wonder where he's from." Sam inquired, glancing back to check on him.
"It can't be too far, unless kid's an alien."
"Dean."
"What?? It's not like he's listening. Besides, obviously he's some kind of un-human if your 'Shining' was so strong with him." I continued to drive and spotted a diner sign for the next exit a few miles down.
"You think he's hungry? I'm starved."
He shrugs, "I'm sure he is. He looks kinda sunken."
I chewed on my bottom lip, "well if he ever tells us something...we can go from there and find whoever mistreated him."
"Yeah, well..all we can do is wait and see."The exit came, and I turned on it. The diner was dead, with only three cars in the lot. I parked the Impala next to a ragedy red pick up. "You get to wake him up. Or...carry him in."
Sam rolled his eyes, "I'm sure he'll be fine if I just wake him."
It turned out not to be that bad, either. Sammy had gently touched him and the kid jerked awake. It also turned out that on top of being exhausted, he had also been starving. Because once we ordered and got our food, he was the first one done. The waitress would walk by and shoot Sam and me the ugliest looks, like we'd been the ones to starve the kid.
"Don't stress about that old crow. We know we saved this kid." I brushed her off..but Sammy has always been the soft one. It tore at him a little harder.
He leaned into the boy, "hey..now that you've been fed and got a little sleep in ya, you think you could at least give me a name for you?"
The little boy looked up, with cheeks full of food. He gulped, "Trevor.." he said it so quietly we both almost missed it.
Sammy almost burst with joy, "good, good. Progress. Do you know your parent's names?"
Trevor looked a little confused at this one, "I have a dad...I think..." his face squished up in thought.
"It's okay, kid, don't hurt yourself. We're happy with your name. But can you tell us if you were...mistreated, maybe?" I rested on my elbows and leaned in closer to wait for his reply.
"M-mistreated?"
"Yeah, were you not fed enough or forced to sleep in shitty spaces or something equivalent?"
"Dean-"
Trevor held his hand up to Sam, and laid his arm out on the table in front of me. On his forearm was an adult sized handprint. We made eye contact and I nodded. "Sometimes, Sammy, you have to talk to children like adults to get adult answers. But without force. Listen, Trevor, if you remember who did this, I promise you that we can protect you from them."
Sam nodded in agreement, "that's a double promise. We're pretty good at that protection stuff."
Trevor creased his eyebrows and stared down at his forearm. "S-sam...?"
Sam shot me a sideways glance of confusion and concern but continued anyway, "what's up, bud?"
"Thanks for noticing me before Dean squished me." He half giggled. He was seeming more like a child.
Sam's grin was so big and goofy I almost spit my drink out on the kid's face. "Absolutely! I told you; safe with us." He grinned.
I shifted my gaze back and forth between them before saying, "you guys finished?" When they nodded I said, "let's head out then. But first, I have to order some pie to-go. Waitress!" I craned my head around.
Sam laughed as I placed my to go order for pie. Once it came out, we were back on the road. I told Trevor once it was day time we would stop somewhere and buy him actual clothes. He was thrilled and stuffed. As soon as he nestled into the covers he was out. Sam peered over the seat like mother bird over her nest. I almost choked on my spit.
"You're a freak, Sam, quit it."
He faced foward, "I'm really glad the diner experience worked out for us. I just hate that he was mistreated. Dean, we have to keep him safe...seeing him, although he's a small male child...reminds me of Charlie..and..how-"
"Please, Sam," I cut him off, clenching my jaw up, "I really wish you'd not with Charlie."
He cleared his throat, "I know we got him."
I pushed the lump that tried to form in my throat away, "yeah, well, hopefully we can protect him better than we did Adam."
Sam slapped his hands against his cheeks, "Dean, oh my God, Adam is still stuck in the fucking pits of Hell."
I had almost forgotten that he was practically missing majority of his memories following his body abduction and coming back from Hell himself that he must've forgotten our bastard brother from another woman our dad slept with. "Yeah, Sammy...it was kind of understood that he was basically a sacrifice...or something."
"Dean?! Or something? That was part of John Winchester's blood, OUR blood. Just because you were jealous doesn't mean you had a right to abandon him in Hell. He's-"
"He's been in Hell so long his mind is probably so fucking gone he's making fucking brownies with Crowley and the other Hellions." I growled, tightening my hands on the wheel.
"Dean?" Trevor's tiny voice came from the back seat unexpectedly.
"What's up, guy?"
He pulled himself foward and rested his head sideways on the seat so he was looking at me, "I remember who my dad is."
"That's great-" Sam began.
"It's Crowley."
I threw on the breaks.
