My heart is as broken as my mind
As soon as Steve opened the oak door, a body thrust itself at him, nearly knocking him onto his ass but he managed to steady himself.
"Sorry, Steve. I was leaning against the door." Sam murmured and steadied himself, acting like he was smooth. "I didn't try to attack you so put that puppy down. I heard Bucky came out of cryo today? Where is he?" He demanded and glanced around Steve who frowned and side stepped.
Bucky was visible in the background, watching with a narrowed eye glare. Yeah that's right, he thought, I remember when you said you wouldn't move your seat up.
Sam just gave a mocking wave, making sure to use his left hand just to add a bit of an extra punch to his insult. But when Bucky surged forwards, ready to to kill Sam, Steve quickly wrapped an arm around his waist and easily held the former assassin back.
"Not now, Buck. Don't let him get to you alright?" Steve sighed and began pulling Bucky back to couch, although Bucky didn't really offer much of a resistance since he just trusted Steve's judgement a hell of a lot more than his own.
"I think Bucky needs to learn that he's not the biggest, baddest thing on the Earth." Sam said casually and then walked over and took a seat, specifically sitting next to Bucky just to irritate him. Bucky didn't remember Sam being this annoying, but it was pissing him off a lot and he found himself getting up and walking to the kitchen where Steve had disappeared to.
"Steve." Bucky grumbled and Steve flinched then turned to him.
"Hey. What's up?" Steve asked softly and handed Bucky a cup of coffee, which Bucky stared at in confusion and then slowly went to take a sip, noting how hot the cup was and therefor realizing that the drink must be hot too. He didn't really know what coffee was anymore. Seventy years of not having it or hearing about it did that to a person.
"I was just wondering why you let the bird in here. Those things are hard to get out of the rafters." Bucky grunted before sipping the coffee and widening his eyes. "Holy f- What is this?" He stumbled out and stared at Steve who gave him a weird look.
"Buck, it's coffee. You used to love coffee." He laughed softly, remembering how his Bucky used to be the crankiest in the morning before he got his java. In fact, Bucky seemed to still be like that. Because up until that point, he'd been a little grumpy. But now he seemed to be in a decent mood again, despite Sam being in the other room humming excessively.
"Hey Sam leave Bucky alone. He just got out of cryostasis and there's no need to be pestering him." Steve called protectively, sliding an arm around Bucky's shoulders but Bucky quickly shied away from the touch and took another brief sip of his coffee.
Next to Steve, Bucky felt like a child. Especially feeling his muscular arm around him, keeping him from the dangers of the world. Yes, it was nice to feel protected, but on the other hand, Bucky was a grown man. He didn't need to be shielded away from everything. He'd been hurt enough already that it wasn't really a worry of his any longer. If he was going to get hurt, he wanted to go out with his dignity.
Steve frowned when Bucky pulled away from him and he sighed quietly. Obviously Steve didn't want to force Bucky into anything he didn't want to do, but he was having a really hard time not touching Bucky and making sure he was there.
But that's something Steve would never admit to doing. If anybody knew he constantly had the worry that all of this was some stupid dream and he'd wake up and his best friend would still be at the bottom of that mountain, they'd think he needed serious therapy. Which Steve didn't really disagree with. But there wasn't really anything he could do about his worries. It just seemed so surreal that Bucky was there and within grasp again.
