I sit on the dusty floor of the asylum with the doctors journal in front of me. I had been continuously flipping through the pages. I go back to the very first page of the journal. There was one line going across the page. On this line the name 'David Mintz' was written in sloppy cursive writing. That must be the doctors name. I should see if he has any living relatives, maybe I could learn more about this man.
I get up and stuff the journal back into my hoodie pocket. I make my way to the front entrance, but it still won't open. I sigh in frustration. I turn around and am face to face with Luke. I jump back a bit, holding my hand over my heart.
"Jesus, Luke! You can't just pop up like that!"
"Why are you trying to leave?"
"I'm trying to find more about this doctor guy. I have to go to the library. I promise I'll be back, Luke. Please. Let me go. Let me help you." I say, pointing towards the door.
Luke looks at me for a moment before finally he agrees to let me go. The doors swing wide open and I begin to walk outside. My skin was bathed in sunlight, which felt amazing. I began my journey into to town. I probably looked like a mess. My hair was thrown into a messy ponytail and my clothes were covered in dirt and dust. I enter the library, at last. I walk in and begin to walk down the many isles of its town history. I couldn't find anything on the asylum, so I asked the librarian for books about the asylum or the doctor.
The librarian was a petite old lady, who seemed happy to feel of assistance. She brought me a stack of books and I thanked the woman before I started my little investigation.
The first book I started with was about the history of the asylum. There wasn't much I didn't know in the book, however I moved onto and old newspaper. The paging was yellow and worn. I begin to wonder why the old woman had given me this. That's when I saw it. In the obituaries, there he was. David Mentz. It mentioned his son and grandson. His grandson might be alive, maybe I can talk with him. I continue my hunt through the old books and papers. There was a small newspaper clipping, the title read 'Insanity Cured!'. The article was all about the doctor and his experimental surgeries. It discussed the use of lobotomies and other such operations. He was painted to be a local hero. He was looked at as if he had made an amazing achievement and was helping society. It made me sick to read these good comments towards the doctor. The patients in the asylum had experienced so much pain and suffering. How did people think what this man was doing was good?
I decide to stop reading and walk towards the front desk of the library. The librarian took my books and put them into a cart, sitting behind the desk. I ask about the doctors grandson, and she's able to find me his address. His name is Jack Mintz. I thank the kind lady many times, unable to believe I would get this far in my search.
I exit the library and decide to just sit for a minute, to digest all this information I had taken in in such a short period of time. As I sit on a wooden bench I look up at the library. There's a plaque at the entrance of the library. It reads 'Mintz Library'. Those two words made me sick. He even had a library in honor of him. If only the people of this town knew that their old hero was actually quite the villain.
-Wow I haven't written anything new in a while! Feels good to start writing again! This was just a filler chapter, but I hope you enjoyed! Please please please VOTE AND COMMENT❤️
