Hope

When  I begin my journey back to the asylum I can't help but feel the need to be back in the dusty, abandoned building. Almost like I'm attached to the building, like I'm addicted to the asylum.

I begin my walk up the stone steps, leading to the entrance of the mental facility. I open the door and shut it behind me. I'm immediately greeted with Luke standing right behind me, and Lily clinging to his leg.

"I need evidence, solid evidence. Something I can post in the paper and there's no way they can make up excuses. We will get justice for all of you." I say, looking at the tall boy in front of me.

For the first time, I see something in his eyes. A twinkle, or maybe a spark.

"You've given me the best thing. Hope. That's something I haven't had in a long time." Luke smiles at me.

His sudden surge of happiness must have triggered something, because a flashback begins.

I'm sitting in front of an old home in the country. There are trees surrounding the land, and a pond towards the back of the house. The house seemed to be quite expensive and luxurious. There are three stories to the house and beautiful flowers filled the grounds around the home. It seemed to be out of a movie, but I soon learn this movie doesn't have a happy ending.

I walk up the stairs to the elegant home, and push the door open. I walk to the dining room and there's a long table, filled with wonderful food. However, no one occupies the many empty seats around the table.

I suddenly hear screaming, and decide to follow the voices. I'm lead to a grand wooden staircase. I walk up each step, some creaking under the weight of my feet. The voices continue as I walk down a long, dimly lit hallway. Paintings and portraits lined the walls of the hallway. Suddenly I'm standing in front of the door, which seems to be where the voices are coming from. I slowly turn the doorknob, and I'm greeted with a shocking scene.

Luke is sitting on a bed in a room, which I'm assuming is his, and a older woman who looks to be his mother is scolding him.

"Luke, how many times have I warned you?! If you don't stop this nonsense we will not hesitate to send you away! We will not have you disgracing the family name over your foolishness!" The woman yells. "Now, the guests will be here any minute. If you come downstairs looking like a mess, there will be consequences." The woman leaves on an evil tone, slamming the door on the way out.

Luke walks to a bathroom, which is connected to the room. He begins to pull up the sleeves on his shirt. Cuts litter his wrists and travel up his entire arm. All of the cuts are bleeding and he begins to run water over the cuts, hissing at the pain. Soon there is more blood than water in the sink.

He puts on a fresh shirt and heads downstairs, his dull eyes making his fake smile even less convincing.

Suddenly I'm at the bottom of the grand staircase, there's a huge crowd of people behind me. There seems to be some kind of party going on.

Suddenly Luke walks down the stairs. His hair is a mess and his eyes are bloodshot. There are tears continuously running down his cheeks. He stops midway down the stairs and turns to look down at the crowd of people.

Some people notice, and stare at the boy in confusion. Then, Luke takes out a gun and points it to his temple. Now many people have gasped in horror and the room has become quiet, everyone looking at the boy.

Suddenly his mother rushed to the front of the crowd.

"You get down here right now! You're embarrassing me!" She screeches

"I want to die" Luke sobs

The crowd looks at the boy with looks of pity and horror. His mother quickly scans the crowds faces.

"He's just kidding!" She reassures the crowd. "Isn't that right Luke?" She says through gritted teeth

Luke simply shakes his head, tears streaming down his face. "I'll never be good enough." He whispers to himself.

His mother slowly walks up the stairs, and quickly snatches the gun away from Luke. Luke, still in a dazed and broken state, doesn't even fight back. His mother drags him by the ear to her car, parked right outside of the house.

"I can no longer deal with you." Is the only thing she says through the whole drive on the way to the asylum.

Luke simply sits, with a unreadable expression. Dry tears stain his cheeks and dried blood can be seen covering his arms.

When the flashback is over, I'm left looking at the same boy. This time there's no dullness in his eyes, only determination.
