Chapter 10
Noah was King.
That meant he could very well handle himself. But this night had given him so many setbacks that now he wasn’t rational enough to put the fire in his blood at the back burner.
Starting with Eva’s appearance, her remoteness, absence of her emotional grid, her lack of response to him, her disturbing story and now this…this anarchy in his home.
It didn’t take him long to figure out the drinks had been doped and the only thing standing between them and possible incapacitation had been Eva’s vigilant senses.
Noah ran after Eva and her comrades giving a stiff command for Sahran to go to the control room. The control room would allow them a pair of eyes and ears watching the whole manor.
Noah glimpsed the trailing ends of Eva’s gown disappear around the corner, leading to the kitchen wing. The corner split into a fork. The other side lead to the back gardens of the manor.
He peered into the silent corridor but didn’t see anyone on their way out to the gardens. Keeping his steps silent he entered the lobby leading to the kitchen.
The dark stone walls provided enough darkness for him to creep up behind Eva. The old fire lamps at regular intervals did nothing to hamper his movements.
Eva turned back with a finger on her lips and then motioned for him to take her side at the opposite wall. Moving silently by her side he plastered his back on the opposite wall.
He noticed she had a gun in the hand she had motioned for him to remain silent and a short blade in the other. Her gown was ripped on the right side. All the way from her upper thigh to the bottom, allowing her enough leg movement. He could easily make out the two holsters on the slit leg. Both were empty. So that’s where the weapons in her hand had come from.
The hints of naked skin in the dim fire light did nothing to maintain his concentration. He could easily make out the soft looking skin of her thighs and calves even in the sparse lighting.
While he had been perusing her from top to bottom, she had been doing the same. At his lack of weapons she raised an eyebrow in mocking amusement. His only reaction was to ignite his fingertips.
She gave him a look that said she wasn’t in the least bit intimidated or convinced of his method of ‘ammunition’. The woman didn’t really know what she was dealing with. She would realise soon.
But Noah didn’t plan to blow up anything anytime soon. Eva wouldn’t be meddling in his home without telling him first. Whatever was in that drink she would tell him about it first and then he would let her know if she was allowed to just plunge herself into danger’s path like she was planning to do now.
He caught her arm from behind and turned her to face him. Her startled but wary expression didn’t stop him from taking a step closer and encroaching into her personal space. Without worrying about the consequences of having her weapons so close to his body he leaned down and-unable to fight the craving-brushed his lips on her ear before whispering into the organ.
“Before you run off hither-tither and make me come after you it would be better to discuss what happened during dinner and then decide our course of action.”
She jerked her arm out of his grasp surprisingly strong for such a small woman and gritted her teeth in an effort to glean patience. He didn’t give a whit if she was irritated but she was not running off playing Lara Croft in the Manor.
