CHAPTER 5

Noah had never found himself more frustrated than he was at the moment.

He was obsessed with a black haired, onyx eyed beauty that refused to leave even a single corner of his mind without longing.

After getting the tinted glass of the French window replaced in his office he'd been pacing the floor like a lawn mower. For the past one and a half hour he'd been trying to put her in a corner of his mind.

He was miserably unsuccessful.

Everything about her engaged him. Her lips, her hair, her sharp mind, her voice, the stubborn look in her eyes, her delicate hands which were surprisingly strong, her wit and even her sarcastic remarks made him feel more fresh, more...alive.

Being the king was not easy. He always had to behave with a certain decorum expected of him and had to play the politics of council with utmost care. There weren't many who disliked him but the few who did were old and cunning enough to pounce on any mistake he made.

The things and the people who contributed to the meager liveliness in his life were few and rare. He coveted those invaluable treasures. And he had just found a new addition to his treasure chest.

One thing ate at his mind though, and that was Eva's remoteness

Her expression never changed much. From the time she was attacked upon by him till the time she made the deal with him, her emotional grid rarely changed..

Either she was very good at hiding her emotions or she had a lack of emotions, which was impossible.

And even more disturbing but interesting was that he hadn't been able to recognize the species of the trio. They clearly weren't human. And he wasn't sure but if his heat sense was right Eva had higher body temperature than her friends.

She was a mystery he would love to unfold.

At the heels of the thought he heard a knock on his office door. He looked up from the ground to see noor behind the door with only her head visible.

"May I come in brother?"

Noor happened to be one of those people in his life that brought him liveliness. She happened to be one of his treasures.

"Till now my refusal has never seemed to matter to you, sister."

Ignoring his teasing reply she glided in and shut the door behind her with a soft click.

When she turned around all signs of amusement had left her face and instead a worried expression had taken its place.

Noor understood the kind of life he had to live as king so instead of getting worried she normally supported him through his council troubles. For her to be worried spoke of a rather unpleasant situation.

"What is it? What bothers you so Noor?"

"Who are they Noah?"

He kneaded the back of his neck with gentle fingers and sighed in helpless frustration.

"They were being chased by necromancers before they arrived here. They arrived in a rather fancy manner, breaking the glass of the French window. And they came by teleporting, most likely magic. But they are not necromancers because they had no aura. But they aren't human either or any duskbreaker for the matter. I cannot recognize their species." He answered her while taking a seat on the chaise..

"You've never had a problem with recognizing a species before." Noor said with a frown and took a seat beside him.

"I know."

"They have trouble stamped all over them Noah. I couldn't even pick their thoughts with clarity. I was able to grasp a measly figment of a thought from them excluding the one named Eva. With Eva, all I could sense was an impenetrable wall. Nothing about them bodes well Noah."

So it wasn't only him but Eva really did seem emotionally dysfunctional. He really did not like the word 'dysfunctional' connected to Eva.

But Noor had always been able to sense and understand emotions of the mind. She had always been able to pick thoughts from people's minds if she wanted to. All she needed was enough concentration. So it was disturbing to know that his little spitfire could lack the actual fire.

"Do not worry too much Noor. I intend to find out everything about them as soon as possible, starting tomorrow at dinner. It was a part of the deal we made to allow them shelter against necromancers. Could you inform our guests about the dinner and do so before the sun comes up at dawn today. Do not inform Eva. I will do so myself." He told her.

"Be careful brother. She seems to have the potential to set you on the edge. And you already seem to be quite bothered for the past six months."

No matter how close he was to his sister he had kept the matter of his dreams to himself.

"Do not worry about me sister, I will be fine. You take care of Akira and Sarah." He said taking her small hand in his and placing a soft thankful kiss on her fingers while ignoring her comment about his six month bother.

Nodding her head in acknowledgement she quietly left the room.

Why did he have a feeling that the next few weeks to come were going to be the hardest and most life altering weeks of his 600 year existence?
