Chapter 11
Akshata was a Krusnik.
Being terrified to this level was not in her make-up.
But today, today was complete new story. One she didn’t want to witness ever, ever again.
She turned from the window, letting the curtains slide into place and looked at the bed once again. Her oldest and closest friend lay on it looking like a broken china doll. Remorse filled the cold spaces of her heart.
She remembered Anuja’s earlier words or were they even really hers?
Her eyes shifted to the King’s. He was looking at Anuja’s resting form with such intensity that she almost expected Anuja to wake up from that alone.
As though sensing her scrutiny, the King’s eyes shifted to hers.
The ash colour dominated the planes of his eyes right now. They truly were beautiful eyes. And he was just as powerful as his eyes were beautiful.
So were they.
But right now, his strength, his presence was what Anuja needed. That’s what they all needed.
Sighing wearily she said, “We lied. About everything.”
“Continue.”
No surprise, No contempt, just pure command from someone who was used to having his way.
Pushing her ire aside for the moment she continued, heeding the King’s wish. Just this once.
“Ever heard of V? Who’s the bogey-man of the Demons?”
V never had a specific name. Every culture knew him differently.
“Never heard of V. We don’t let bogey-men exist amongst us for long so that is out of the question.”
“V was a vampire. At least that is what we think he is. He made us. The six of us-”
“Six?”
“-Don’t interrupt, please. I’m going to say this only once so listen close. I don’t have the heart to repeat.”
She didn’t think she could take ever repeating what she was going to tell the King. There were too many memories, too much pain, too many losses.
“He made the six of us over different time spans from different chronological eras. Anvi, me and Anuja were made at the same time. Able Dayspade, Isabella Guatemo and Nicholas Stone. The other Three were made one after the other long before us. But they stayed under V’s watch. He wanted the perfect soldier, the perfect killer, and he hadn’t got it yet.”
Noah didn’t miss the sorrow starched in Akira’s tone. Didn’t miss the shadows of the past flitting through her eyes. She paused once then continued.
“V…trained us. He made us bleed, made us leave our lives behind and made us what we are today. He was insane, a maniac given lease to do whatever he wanted. He once told us he would make his people regret ever kicking him out of their lands. We were made around 320 years back. We devised a way to get out from under V’s thumb. To him we were his precious army of killers that would kill and maim for him. He made us in his image. But he didn’t realise his pets were turning against him. He was killed and now we freelance. Don’t ever forget King that we are very, very dangerous. Much more than any of the Duskbreakers. I can wipe out half of the manor with just a fraction of power that runs through my veins. And the woman you can’t get your eyes off? She is much more dangerous than any of us. She is unstable and that makes her the perfect weapon.”
She didn’t tell him that wouldn’t truly ever be free of V or what he had done. They lived with it every day. Spawning his evil in their very hearts.
“My real name is Akshata and Sahara’s is Anvi. We lied because we didn’t want to tell you who we really were. We aren’t supposed to exist.”
“What changed?” Noah didn’t for a second believe Akira or Akshata or whatever. He didn’t think he could believe the words of their mouth anymore. But the shivers in her frame and the miasma of death in her eyes made him think again.
Maybe she was telling the truth. Maybe.
Akshata’s grid was lost again. Just like Anuja’s used to be.
He moved closer to Anuja wanting some kind of contact with her. Sitting by the side of her head he sifted his hands through the black cloud of her hair.
So soft, so delicate. Did she really have the capacity to be as dangerous as Akshata was telling him?
“You heard what she said in the kitchen today? A language you weren’t able to decipher?”
“Yes. I also noticed you and Anvi-is it?-stretching your weapons at her throat.”
Noah had been furious. No one, No one would threaten his woman.
Akshata didn’t flinch. Didn’t as much as blink.
“We Krusniks-That’s what we call ourselves-are not supposed to know that language. We’re programmed only to understand it but not to speak. She-” She said, pointing a finger towards Anuja “-Shouldn’t have been able to speak that language. Ever. That language is the only one which has spells to entrance Krusniks. It was V’s language. On heavy usage of our power the colour of our eyes change momentarily. It’s different for each of us. Only one person ever had that mix of colour and the ability to speak the long dead language.”
“Who?” Noah voice was rough. He had a very bad feeling about the answer. He had an inkling that he wished with all his heart was wrong.
“V.”
