Chapter 12
Anuja felt like a floating cloud, a giant soft ball of gasses. Without form and shape. A weightless mass of nothingness. She wanted to stay like this forever.
And then the merciless kick of reality hit her square in the chest. Her unseeing eyes snapped open and her body convulsed in a bone breaking spasm.
She clutched at nothing in particular, trying to breathe through the pain wracking her body. No sensations registered, just the suffocating darkness of her useless eyes held her in it's clutches. She tried to scream but no sound came.
She didn't know if she was moving or if she was still. She felt closed in and it made her feel as though her skin was being turned inside out.
As suddenly as it had started, it stopped. She sagged into whatever was holding her body. One by one her senses kicked in. Her fingertips brushed soft material and her body sank into the same soft material. Almost like the cloud.
She took her first clear breath after long. The clean, crisp air cleared all the way into her nostrils and tickled her nose.
And then she felt searing heat.
All around her she felt the burning intensity of volcanic heat. She absorbed the divine energy, not in the least bit burned by it. She felt hard, hot hands shaking her, running up her arms, through her hair and down her face.
All at once the rest of her faculties made an appearance. Her hearing pulled in the sounds of a deep but panicked angry voice. A growl and the next thing she knew she was bouncing on the soft cushions holding her and the cushions were replaced by a much harder body. A big one.
The bright light of colours around her made her eyes water and she struggled to focus on something.
“It's alright, I've got you. You're safe. Don't scream,please god, it's killing me.”
The last part was whispered in such a soft voice that she thought she was hearing things. The rough voice set off mental alarms in her head but she didn't know for what. The blurry image of black and mahogany hair came into view. By the time her vision cleared she was staring into a hauntingly beautiful pair of ash and green eyes. Eyes that could speak volumes with just a glance. Right now they were filled with worry and fear. And distinctive anger.
It didn't intimidate her. She felt like staring into their strength forever. Getting lost in them and then finding herself again. She took a deep breath and her lungs filled with the smell of burning wood and night skies.
Noah's heat made her shiver.
As soon as that thought registered she shot off the bed and his arms as though she had finally felt the pain of his burning heat.
Her jelly noodle legs didn't support her frame at all and she would have crumpled to the floor if not for the support provided by the foot of the bed.
Noah didn't make any move to help her, but rose and moved to his left slowly as though he was afraid of startling her with any rapid movements. As soon as her legs were under control she gave herself a mental once over to make sure she felt fine. She felt the hard, cold stone under her feet and somehow it grounded her far better than Noah's tempting heat. She looked around her and noticed she was back in the same room He'd given her earlier. It was dark except for the bright red and orange light of the fire.
