"Happy birthday!" Camila and her father cheered as Sofi blows out her candles and claps her hands excitedly. She let out a yawn considering it was 9AM and she was just woken up for her presents.
"Make a wish, Sofi." Camila said, caressing her sister's back, which the girl did. She closed her eyes and opened them after a few seconds.
She grabbed Camila's hand and looked up. "I wished that we stay best friends forever." She informed her.
"You're not supposed to tell anyone your wish, silly." The brown-eyed girl enveloped Sofi in a hug and squeezed her a few times. "But I hope we'll stay best friends forever as well."
Sofi smiled widely, "Can I know my surprise gift already? Pleaseeee?" She pouted.
"Not just yet, kiddo. You'll see when we go to the mall today." Camila winked and Sofi's eyes widened immediately. Apparently she had put the pieces together and figured out that going to the mall must meant that she would get an amazing birthday gift.
"Yay! I can't wait." She grabbed her new toys and ran off to the livingroom, eager to test them out and play with them until it was time for them to leave.
Fifteen minutes passed and Alejandro was not amused by the thought of his two girls going to the mall all by themselves. He paced around, signifying that he was in deep thoughts.
"Are you sure it's a good idea?" He said worriedly.
"Dad, I'm sixteen. I can handle it." Camila tried to hide her annoyance, her father could be very protective and that was a little bit annoying to say the least.
"Okay then," Alejandro hesitated but still gave in. "Text me when you arrive at the mall and when you're leaving, don't forget that."
"I will, I swear." Camila promised impatiently as she grabbed her coat and put it on swiftly. "Sofi, are you coming?"
On their way to the mall Sofi couldn't stop rambling about how all of her friends would be jealous once they got to see the presents she got and Camila was just smiling as she listened to her sister. It's been a while since she saw a smile on Sofi's face, after all their home situation wasn't ideal.
Alejandro worked full-time so Camila had to take over her mother's role and pick Sofi up from school, drive her to piano lessons and often cook dinner for the both of them. It wasn't an easy task, but she gave Sofi her all and thankfully that was enough for the little one.
Camila pulled up in the parking lot and once she parked her car she turned the engine off. She sent a quick text to her father to let him know they arrived and then turned to Sofi. "Okay, kiddo." She started. "We're going to the new store where they have all sorts of toys, is that okay?"
"YAY I WANNA GO NOW CAN WE GO NOW I CAN'T WAI-"
"Sofi." Camila interrupted giggling at the sight of her young sister being this excited and energetic. "Promise me you won't abandon me and run off as soon as we get out of this car?"
But her sister wasn't listening as she got out the car and started bouncing up and down, waiting for her sister impatiently.
It took exactly two minutes to get to the other side of the mall, not because they used short cuts but because Sofi dragged her older sister across the huge building and by the time they walked into the store Camila had to swipe away some sweat from her forehead and she started to regret taking Sofi here on one of the hottest days of the year.
