I stared as Sam jumped off of my bed, saying something I didn't quite catch. Oh god. I felt heartless. I was trying to find the right words but I couldn't. I just couldn't. I was now alone. My phone buzzed. I ignored it. There was a gentle knock at my door. "Luce? Your... Um Marchel's here," She sounded as excited as I should be. I was before I saw the look on Sam's face when I turned to show them my costume. A look of desire, admiration and... Resent. It was only then that I realised what I was doing. I was such an idiot. Asking the person who liked me to help me get ready for a date with someone else. No, I wasn't excited anymore. I was guilty. I shuffled onto the balcony and shivered, suddenly wishing I had a jacket that went with my costume. Marchel and I greeted eachother with an awkward hug in front of my mum. She was acting like a kid at a wiggles concert. The walk to Marchel's Dad's car was silent. Should I hold his hand? Too late. The car was warm. Comfortable. I felt at immediate ease when Marchel's Dad began to talk. "Oh a ghoul nice!" Marchel visibly cringed. I just let out a nervous laugh and explained that it was Sam's sisters. Wait why did I say that? Marchel's gonna think I'm so trashy. "OK guys we're here. Now behave yourselves! I'm not ready for grankids." It sounded like a joke but his tone said otherwise. "Was he serious?" I asked when Marchel's Dad was safely on the road and out of earshot. Marchel just shrugged and walked towards the auditorium. Hyped up twelvies (all with glittery faces and short shorts) and huge looking seniors (all in casual cloths, looking like they were fed up already) were filtering around outside. The atmosphere was full of good cheer and the smell of spilt cordial which, surprisingly, wasn't all that unpleasant. My mood was beginning to lighted. "Raspberry Sweet?" Marchel offered as he reached into his bag. His face paint, obviously ment to be a skeleton was already cracking. I agreed and grabbed a handful with my good hand. "Heyyy!" He smiled and made a grab for them. I yanked my hand out of the way and ran backwards a few steps, giggling. "You've gotta catch mee," I taunted. He grinned and dropped his bag. This was war. I screamed and started running when he booked it towards me. I made a sudden turn onto the wet grass, tripping in the process. Marchel landed on top of me and sent the handful of raspberry sweets askew. We were left giggling, still on the ground. I was suddenly aware of how close we were. Our breaths were still heavy. He had a freckle on his half closed eyelid. I lifted myself up on my elbow, expecting him to move off of me. Instead he moved closer. "Wha?" I was silenced by a gentle peck on my cheek. Did he just? His smile was dazzling. I collapsed back on the ground as his lips suddenly pressed against mine. My stomach leapt. I pushed him away with my good hand. "What was that?" I breathed as he sat up. I followed his lead. Then I saw it. Sam. Walking through the school gates. Spotting us sitting on the grass, they waved. What now?
