Dana sighed and raked a hand through her hair, taking a look at her surroundings. The monorail was packed today, a late Monday morning, families packed together, small kids pressed their faces against the glass to try and catch a glimpse at a dinosaur.
One pair stuck out to her as she continued to gaze around her, a teenaged boy, he seemed around her age, who was chatted with the girls behind him. The younger boy next to him stared out the window pitifully, silent tears rolling down his cheek. Dana watched for a few moments, waiting for the older of the two to make a move and comfort his brother- she deduced based on their similar facial features and the fact that they were dressed in the same brands, obviously from the same store- but no such moment came.
The boy stood after what seemed like five minutes and moved to the empty pair of seats in front of his brother after many of the tourists rushed to look at the dinosaurs. Her eyebrows pulled together and she debated whether or not to go to him; she found her feet moving before her mind could make up what it was going to do.
When she was in front of him, she bent down a bit to become eye level with him, "Is this seat taken?" His murky green eyes met her's and he nodded, a few more tears sliding down his reddened cheeks. They sat in silence, him resting his head on the window, her looking back and forth from the boy next to her and his brother.
She rolled her eyes at his shamelessly flirting at the girls behind him, and turned to the younger boy, her eyes softening as she took him in, "Are you alright?"
He turned to her so quickly she was almost sure that he'd get whiplash, green eyes watery, "Why do you care?" His tone was tired and harsh. She hummed, her eyes sparkling with mischief, "I care because you're in a park full of real, actual dinosaurs, and you're crying, so something must be bothering you. And, besides, I'm a naturally curious person, I like human emotions, they amuse me."
"Don't you have more important "teenage" things to do." He rolled his eyes, his tone sad and lonely.
Dana answered his eye roll with one of her own and sighed dramatically, "I am a terribly boring person so I fear to inform you that I have no 'teenager' business to attend too." He cracked a small smile and wiped at his eyes with his sleeve.
She smiled at him, holding out her hand, "I'm Dana, by the way." He sniffled and took my hand, "Grey Mitchell." The lapsed into silence once more before she broke it.
"On a serious note, now that we've been introduced, what's bugging you?" He shrugged, "Nothing, I'm fine."
She shook her head at him and 'tsked', "I definitely believe you then because emotionally stable people cry on monorails. It seems perfectly logical."
Grey glared at her playfully and she couldn't help but wonder if this was what it was like to have a younger sibling. She continued on, "Spill."
His eyes started to fill with water again and Dana felt her heart crack as he spoke up quietly, "My parents are getting divorced, my aunt Claire doesn't care about us. She left us with her assistant for crying out loud! My older brother doesn't care about the divorce, he thinks I'm being a baby because I cried, I just don't want two of everything. Like you said! We're in a park of dinosaurs and he's more worried about picking up girls than looking around him." Grey ranted, finally letting it all out.
