Oh boy. Junior Year. Woo-hoo. But, hey! You're an upperclassman now, right? It'll be fun, I'm sure!
Okay, I'm sure it's not too bad, but damn, there were a ton of drama that happened at my school that year. But, I'll tell you that in the end.
There are MANY things that I learned that year:
1. Upperclassmen does NOT mean power. Yes, they underclassmen will most likely be terrified of you because, oh shit, you're a junior. Don't take that too seriously though, because the fear in many will only last a few weeks (if your lucky). It also does not mean you get to "rule" over underclassmen or give orders. Remember what it was like to be an underclassman, and that awful feeling of being disrespected because of your age. Yeah, they'll feel it too, you know. Of course, there are some privileges and such. But that's mostly in sports and clubs and such.
2. Behave, please. Never do something you don't feel okay doing. Stand your ground! If someone tries to pressure you into something you aren't comfortable with, please, for the love of God, keep your willpower and tell them no. This goes for everyone but I didn't really experience it until my junior year so...
3. Planning prom is hell, so you better have a plan. In my school, junior class would plan prom. Don't get me wrong, it was kind of fun when I look back at it. But, during the planning, it was stressful af. It made it even worse when the prom committee couldn't agree on almost anything. Ugh, at least it turned out okay!
4. Know your place. It doesn't matter if you're older than the majority of the high school now. Do keep in mind that seniors still exists, and they will let you know it.
Okay, now my experience:
The biggest part that defined being a junior at our school was that we had to make sure prom was absolutely amazing for the seniors. Our school was small enough that everyone was allowed to go (9th-12th), so people would be there. If the seniors didn't like it, they would leave, and so would a majority of those in attendance.
Trust me, it happens.
So, we had to plan the best prom we could.
And we did. But, of course, there was so much unnecessary shit involved...
Our class president, who was the head of prom committee as well, planned and shared things with the senior class. Which, if that's all I tell you, you'll probably think, "Yeah, that's a great idea. You want to know what they want, right?"
But there's more.
We weren't informed on any of these plans, until they were already shared. They would have meeting, and the whole prom committee wouldn't find out until they were already in progress.
Also, the senior class didn't like the meeting.
They came up to us, and asked us why we couldn't just make our own decisions.
Well, what decisions? We weren't informed of any decisions.
So we talked with our president, and she said there were no decisions to be made; they were already made.
Okay. What's the point of a committee then?
She then called a meeting, where THEN we were informed of everything she and the seniors had planned.
- Our theme would be "black tie affair"; very formal
Okay, not bad. That was good.
- Out colors were white, black, and red.
Okay, sounds good.
- We have a DJ and caterer in mind
Sweet, sounding fun.
- We are combing with a neighboring school.
.............what the fuck.
No, no we are not doing that. Oh god, the whole room exploded with protests and shit went down. We couldn't agree, and the room was so divided we seriously thought this was never going to get done.
It was panic time, so we conducted a school wide survey. We asked them if they thought we should combine with the school or not.
Well, we ended up combining with them.
Now, we don't hate them...but we are not exactly friends.
And where I come from, we are very competitive. So, our closeness with neighboring schools in mostly entirely dependent on sports.
And when it came to sports, we did not like this one. Especially in volleyball, but that's a story for another time.
So, we got together with this school's committee and planned it out and there turned out pretty good. The seniors were happy, the administration was happy, we were happy.
Also, during my junior year, I had the least successful year in sports. I got my varsity jersey taken away in volleyball because I was replaced by a freshman (ugh, the pain to remember it), and in tennis, my doubles partner and I didn't make it to the district tournament for the first time.
It was awful. I learned from it all, though, and I came back wanting to prove something. And I did, I hope.
I also developed a crush on a boy from another school. Oh my gosh, he's adorable. But, you've already heard that story ❤
Anyway, I hope you all have a great junior year. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!! ✌❤
