The Mob

As soon as I reached the top of the stairs, I changed back to my normal form and took a step away. The hole in the ground where I had come out disappeared, and I realized I was standing in the middle of a road, with tall buildings on either side. The town that I had hid in the shadows in not very long ago. Directly in front of me, blocking the entire road, was the mob. They all held weapons like they had before, and each of them was glaring at me. "It's about time you showed up!" the man in front, who was holding a rusted shovel, yelled to me.

I didn't stick around long enough to see what they were going to do. I turned around and ran in the opposite direction. I could hear the mob close behind. I ran through the town, but no matter where I went, everything was always the same. The same buildings passed by in the same order, the road never changed, and the mob wasn't catching up or falling behind. It was very odd.

My feet soon tired out, and I knew I couldn't keep running much longer. I considered stopping and facing the mob, but I was entirely outnumbered, and I had no idea what they would do, so I continued on. Then, I noticed a ladder leading to the roof of a nearby building. It would get me off this never ending road and might provide a means of escaping the mob behind me. I dashed over to the ladder, and took a deep breath before climbing the ladder and facing my great fear of heights.

As I climbed the ladder, the scene around me slowly started to change. Everything besides the ladder faded away, and I was left holding on to it and looking at the cloud filled sky around me. I looked below me, and saw nothing but the ladder descending into the clouds. I saw no ground, no buildings, and no sign of any life at all. Looking down made the fear take over, and I started to panic. I clutched tight to the ladder as my eyes turned upward. A good ways above me, I saw that the ladder led to a floating platform. From this angle, I couldn't see if there was anything on top of the platform. I carefully ascended the ladder the rest of the way, and stepped onto the platform.

As I looked around, I realized that the only thing on top of the platform was something that struck me with fear. It was a simple sign, standing beside the edge, yet it's meaning, which was perfectly clear, terrified me. There was only one thing on the sign. A simple arrow pointing downwards.
