I was freaking out. Bella was in danger and I had to get her as soon as possible. I approached Charlie, who was still talking with the Governor. They were discussing the town meeting that had been called and how Charlie wanted to send four deputies out to the edges of town to check the highways. While I was waiting for an opportunity to talk with Charlie, I caught snippets of conversations from the others in the room. One in particular grabbed my attention. Eric and Tyler were discussing Zombies.

Shit!

This was bad.

I was more desperate than ever to go to Seattle and get Bella out of there. I was still waiting for Charlie when Colin came into the room, iPad in hand, videos from YouTube loaded for us to see.

The video was just twenty two seconds but you could corroborate what Charlie had told us with it. I could tell from the angle, the video was taken from a window. It was complete chaos. Cars had been crashed and others left abandoned in the street. There were people everywhere, some running and screaming for help, others left to rot away on the sidewalk where they had been dropped. Two people were being eaten alive. In the middle of the street. Their screams were unbelievably loud. And my anxiety was increasing by the second. The room was silent when the video ended, and Charlie spoke up.

“We are having a meeting, in the town square, in forty-five minutes to let people know what is happening. Also, we are going to give you the choice to stay or leave to go home and be with your families.” Charlie sighed deeply.  “I’m going to call the Quileute reservation to let them know what is happening, and because I think A-ka-lat Island, or James Island as all of you know it better, could be our only chance to escape this.”

“But it is sacred land, Chief. No one except the Quileute people can go there,” said Carson. He was right.

“Yes, Carson, I’m very aware of that but maybe, because of the emergency of the situation, they will make an exception,” Charlie replied, not overly convinced.

“Chief, I respect you a lot,” sighed Carson, resigned. “But if you are not convinced the Quileutes can help us then I’m sorry but I’m going home and taking my family away from here.” And just like that, Carson walked out of the room.

The worst came when other deputies walked out too. After they had left it was just Charlie, Clarence-the Governor, Tyler, Eric and me left in the room.

“My God, Charlie, what are we going to do now?” asked the Governor. He was growing more and more agitated.

“Don’t worry, Clarence, go back to your office, and I will see you there in thirty minutes. I hope by then, people in town will have heard the emergency broadcast I sent over the radio and will be headed to the meeting.”

“Okay, Charlie.” The Governor left the room without another word.

“Tyler, Eric, thanks for staying. You should call your families to let them know what is happening. Tell them to lock the doors and board up the windows in your homes. Also a quick trip to the grocery store would be a good idea. Stock up on food and water.” They nodded and went to their desks to make the necessary calls.

Then Charlie looked at me. “Thank you, Edward, I know I can count on you too. Call your mother and father, let them know what is happening. When you’re finished, I would like to see you in my office. The same for you too, guys.”

“Yes Chief.” We all answer at the same time.

I called my parents and told them the situation. My mother was hysterical-thank God my father was at home. He calmed her down and told me they were going to the meeting. After saying our goodbyes we hung up and I made my way in to Charlie’s office.
