BPOV
The Evening of the Second Nightmare Day.
With Jasper, things were a little easier. He let us know we were going to need keys for the tunnel door, that led to the parking lot, where the ambulances parked to pick up injured players and get them out of the stadium. God, we are so stupid, I thought! How had we not thought of that? Which made me remember that I didn’t have my apartment key on me. But, the street door didn’t lock properly and Jasper assured me he would be able to force open the door to my apartment. He also told us that after his adventure with Alice two weeks ago, Coach Romero installed a barbed-wire fence where the cart was parked, so we were going to need keys for that too. After Jasper grabbed them from the same drawer where I found the others, he told us what we were going to do.
“We need to head to the locker room. There is a door there that goes directly to the field and the golf cart. After we take it, we are going to have to cross the field to the tunnel where the infirmary and visitors’ locker room is located. We will need to check if someone, or something, is on the field before we make a move. Then we can take the rest from there.”
Alice and I agreed and immediately we began our trip to the locker room.
Jasper knew his way around the stadium so he took us on the shorter route. I had my bat and Alice gave hers to Jasper, after taking a golf club from Coach Romero’s closet. It wasn’t much, but it was something.
The hard part started out in the hallway. There were at least five zombies waiting for us. It was so hard getting away that Alice was almost bitten by one. That fucking golf club she took got stuck in the head of one of them on the first blow. She killed that thing instantly, but when she tried to remove the club, she couldn’t. Jasper and I were busy with the others when we heard her scream. Another fucking zombie had come out of nowhere and was on the floor, tugging at her leg, snapping his teeth while trying to bite her. Jasper aimed a swing at the head of the one he was busy with and was beside Alice before it could hit the floor, the side of it’s head caved in. He pushed Alice behind his back and struck her zombie so hard, his baseball bat snapped in half. I had just finished taking care of the last one when Jasper wrenched the golf club out of the zombie it had been stuck in, took Alice’s hand in his, and ordered us to run like hell. When we finally made it in to the room Jasper locked us in. I took Alice and guided her to a bench beside the door, leaving my bat on the floor.
“Are you okay? Are you alright? He didn’t bite you, right Alice? Please, tell me he didn’t?”
I hugged her tight when she didn’t answer me and then Jasper came, pushed me aside, and took my place. He cupped her face with his hands, looking so worried.
“Please, please baby, tell me he didn’t bite you. Please. Answer me, dammit!”
Alice was in shock, just staring at him and then, he slapped her. She started to cry immediately and tried to tell us something, but she was a blubbering mess and we didn’t understand a word of what she was saying.
“I… I don’t… He…”
I had to finish seeing if she was alright, so I knelt beside them, lifted the hem of her jeans on each leg, and checked for bite marks.
